Tip of the Day
[edit]Tip of the moment...
![]() Dates in Wikipedia articles
Two date formats are commonly used in Wikipedia articles: December 2, 2009 and 2 December 2009. These are referred to as alphanumeric dates. The first is used in articles with a connection to the United States, and the second in articles relating to most Commonwealth countries (although no preference is expressed for Canada). In articles with no particular national affiliation, to prevent needless edit warring, the established date format should not be changed. However any given article should use just one of the two formats consistently. Dates that are all numeric are highly discouraged to avoid confusion, however if used must be in the YYYY-MM-DD format and never in YYYY-DD-MM format. – – To add this auto-randomizing template to your user page, use {{totd-random}}

Tip of the day...
Work faster with keyboard shortcuts
Wikipedia has keystroke combinations that can speed up your work, like ⇧ Shift+Alt+F to "focus" on (jump to) the search box, ⇧ Shift+Alt+M to move the current page and its talk page, ⇧ Shift+Alt+T to open the current article's talk page, ⇧ Shift+Alt+Y to open a list of your user's contributions, and many more. Those are for Windows users. On the Mac OS, press Control instead of ⇧ Shift+Alt. For some browsers, the accesskey is the Alt key instead. For details see Keyboard shortcuts. – – To add this auto-updating template to your user page, use {{totd3}}
|
The Tip of the Day project provides a different piece of advice for using Wikipedia every day. Like the Picture of the Day, you can include it on your userpage by adding {{totd}} somewhere (at the top of your talk page is a good place for it). The randomized version (displayed above) is {{totd-random}}, and shows a different tip each time it is displayed on your screen. Other formats for the TOTD exist, such as the more compact {{totd3}}, or you can make your own by including {{Wikipedia:Tip of the day/{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTDAY}}, {{CURRENTYEAR}}}} on your userpage (which includes the raw text, without any formatting) and then enclose it in your own formatting. To float the tip of the day to the right of content (as it is displayed here), place this code where you want the tip to show up: {{right|{{totd3}}}}.
Style tips
[edit]A spin off of the tip of the day, this is another template that provides useful instruction a little at a time.

Pics and images
[edit]There is a huge selection of pictures on Wikipedia and its sister site Wikimedia Commons. Pictures can be a powerful way to express yourself...

Pictures can be found all over Wikipedia, but it can be very time-consuming to hunt for them in the encyclopedia's articles. Another option is to browse Wikipedia's collections...

Picture(s) of the day
[edit]The Picture of the Day, which changes daily, is currently displayed every day on the Main Page, and you can use it to decorate your userpage as well...
Here's what the various picture of the day templates look like. To place them on your user page, include the corresponding double-curly bracket code, and the picture will be displayed automagically:

The Mauritius ornate day gecko (Phelsuma ornata) is a diurnal species of gecko in the family Gekkonidae, the common geckos. It occurs in Mauritius, on the main island up to an elevation of 300 metres (980 feet) and on most of the surrounding islands. The species feeds on insects and nectar from flowering plants. It has a typical length of 10 to 13 centimetres (3.9 to 5.1 inches), and can be bluish green, with a back covered with red coloured dots and a head with a T-shaped pattern. This Mauritius ornate day gecko was photographed on the Île aux Aigrettes, an islet of the southeastern coast of the main island.

If you'd rather have it without the text (to make it smaller), you can use {{Wikipedia:POTD/{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}}_{{CURRENTDAY}},_{{CURRENTYEAR}} instead.
Alternate picture of the day
[edit]To display the alternate picture of the day from the no-restrictions anybody-can-add-a-pic-right-now picture project, use {{rpotd}}, which displays this:
Unlike PotD, these pictures are not featured. You can use {{rpotd}} to add the daily random picture to your userpage.

Commons picture of the day
[edit]You can also display the Commons Picture of the Day, which is different from the featured picture displayed on the main page, with {{WP:Wikimedia Commons/POTD}}. Which shows this:
