This article is about a species of commonly encountered leech found in eastern North America. The leeches grow up to 8.5 cm long and have striking orange spots on their backs and a mottled, dull orange underbelly. Their saliva, like that of several leech species, is of scientific interest, and it contains a blood-thinner dubbed "decorsin" which may be unique to the species.
