The white-winged brushfinch (Atlapetes leucopterus) is a species of bird in the family Passerellidae.
Taxonomy
[edit]The White-winged brushfinch is divided into three subspecies in two groups with the following distribution:[2]
Since 2016, Birdlife International and the IUCN have recognized paynteri as its own species, the "Cream-crowned Brushfinch".[3]
Description
[edit]The white-winged brushfinch is a grey and white finch-like bird. Its plumage varies somewhat, with birds in the northern part of its range having a completely black face and chestnut-brown crown, while those further south have white and light crowns. Distinct white wing patches distinguish it from the Bay-crowned brushfinch.[4]
Ecology
[edit]It is found in Ecuador and Peru. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forest, subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, subtropical or tropical moist montane forest, and heavily degraded former forest.
