Volvarina pinero is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Marginellidae, the margin snails.[1]
Description
[edit]The shell of Volvarina pinero attains a length of 5.7 mm and a diameter of 2.5 mm. It exhibits an elongate-ovate shape with smooth, glossy surface texture typical of the Marginellidae family. The coloration is generally translucent white with subtle pale yellow or light brown bands encircling the shell. The aperture is narrow and extends nearly the full length of the shell, bordered by a thickened outer lip that is slightly reflected. The spire is low and moderately pointed, composed of several compact whorls with fine growth lines visible under magnification. The species displays a well-defined siphonal canal, indicative of its burrowing and sediment-inhabiting lifestyle in shallow marine environments off the coast of Cuba.[2]
Distribution
[edit]Volvarina pinero is known to occur exclusively in the shallow marine waters off the eastern coast of Cuba, primarily around the Pinar del Río region. It inhabits sandy and muddy substrates within coral reef-associated environments at depths ranging from 10 to 30 meters. The species’ limited geographical range suggests it may be endemic to this part of the Caribbean Sea. Further surveys are needed to determine whether its distribution extends to neighboring islands or broader Caribbean localities.[2]
