About Vadaseri Kannan River Bridge – A Gateway Through Time By Veerapandi Sekar, Resident of Vadaseri Village

The Vadaseri Kannan River Bridge, located in Orathanadu Taluk of Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, is more than just a means of connectivity — it is a landmark rich in history and engineering marvel.

The current bridge was constructed in the 2000s to meet the growing needs of modern transportation. However, it replaced an older British-era bridge known for its remarkable strength and endurance. The earlier structure, built during colonial times, stood the test of time with its solid construction. Due to issues related to its height and insufficient width for modern transport, the Highways Department decided to demolish and rebuild the bridge.

Demolishing the Old Bridge The demolition of the old bridge proved to be an enormous challenge. Even heavy-duty equipment like excavators and bulldozers failed to bring it down. Ultimately, construction engineers and government officials had to resort to using controlled explosives to demolish the bridge — a rare and striking example of how robust colonial-era engineering was.

To this day, remnants of the old bridge — including stone foundations and brick bars — remain embedded in the area. These elements are so solid that even now, they cannot be easily moved.

A Historic Route to Rameshwaram Beyond its physical structure, the bridge also carries cultural and spiritual significance. According to local ancestors and oral traditions, this very road was once part of the ancient route taken by kings and their troops traveling to Rameshwaram Temple. The road, recognized for its heritage, is still referred to by the Highways Department as the "Rameshwaram Highway."
