AfC
[edit]Afteer the Hasteurbot places the warning about deletion of a draft, there's supposed to be about one month for people to make improvements; You have however been immediately putting on a G13 tag, which makes this impossible for anyone other than an admin. For several of them, since I am an admin, I've been restoring them, and either editing & postponing them, or even accepting them.
The bot has been placing the notices too late, after 6 months instead of the intended 5, but I will deal with that separately. DGG ( talk ) 19:42, 27 December 2015 (UTC)
- @DGG: So you're saying the drafts in the G13 eligible category (where I've been trawling through) are not eligible for G13 deletion after a cursory check for new notability? And in fact a bot has been categorising them incorrectly? Seems a bit of a mess to me, but I'll stop doing that then. Thanks for letting me know
-- samtar whisper 10:29, 28 December 2015 (UTC)
- The bot is supposed to give a notice at 5 months, and then place a deletion tag at 6. that way, there's no problems. Recently, the guy running the bot has only been doing it at 6. Until I get this straightened out, it's necessary to leave a while for improvements. Experience shows that the original editors sometimes do make improvements at the last minute, after they receive a sufficiently impressive warning. In addition, everyone who reviewed the draft has the option of getting a notice--I and some others always do this. At that point, I may postpone again (tat's what the postpone option in the "Review" panel is for, or improve it but leave it still unfinished for me or the original ed or anyone else to finish later, or fix it altogether & move it to mainspace, or speedy it under some additional criterion, usually G11, to prevent re-creation by request.
- I usually do more than a cursory check when I delete, unless I completely trust the reviewer--and even then I check. Besides checking to see if it got fixed, its also necessary to see if the original review or reviews were right in the first place -- at least 25% are not, even now.
- The final check is supposed to be the admin who deletes. A few admins who do a lot of deletion do not actually check, but make the incorrect assumption that if anyone really cares, they'll ask for it back. (the problems are that only an unusually persistent person will, that a good part of those persistent enough are in fact persistent spammers, and that other editors will know it's there to fix it or use it as a base for a new article). Those few admins who delete without checking are not going to change, & they do a lot of deletions, so everyone else must try to compensate for them. Most of the difficulties here are actually inherent in the AfC process, but getting it fixed or replaced will be a long haul, as those who in effect own it do not want to change it. I've been trying for years now. DGG ( talk ) 15:59, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

Things you should know
[edit]Elockid is now deploying unauthorised edit filters (whatever stories he may be telling you). The last administrator who tried this got desysopped. He is also blocking editors before they save their edits (a gross abuse of the tools). As the filter stopped the edit with the following summary being saved, you will be unaware of the situation, so here is the summary:
Rv Lectonar (a German like Future Perfect at Sunset). Almost desysopped by crats. Pal of Drmies, self - declared sex worker. Sunset's puppet was blocked, reason 'main account says "I'm not sexy. For a good time, block the alt, just like it says on the stall wall"'. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.149.13.203 (talk) 15:36, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

[edit]
You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Wikipedia:Help desk. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.
Please be particularly aware that Wikipedia's policy on edit warring states:
- Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made.
- Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.
If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes; work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing.
The comments by the IP appear to be trolling, but were not obvious trolling, so that continuing to revert them was edit-warring. Please avoid edit-warring or request semi-protection. I will be requesting semi-protection. Robert McClenon (talk) 15:33, 1 January 2016 (UTC)
- @Robert McClenon: thanks for the concern, the IP displays all the behavioral characteristics of Vote X (see above for her lovely messages to me) - the IP was blocked for the ban evasion. WP:HD often gets temp. protection applied after she has a little go - as for edit warring, I believe reverting a ban evading user's contributions is exempt, but I may be wrong -- samtar whisper 15:37, 1 January 2016 (UTC)

- @Lagunastarman: No worries
- I'm assuming you're referring to the Citizens' Advisory Council on National Space Policy (CACNSP)? On that page under "Computer Scientists" you can see a red listing for "David Mitchell (computer scientist)" - this means someone is yet to create an article about you, but has linked it as they assume one will be created soon. Unfortunately per our conflict of interest guidelines it's likely someone else will have to create the article about you, and not you. May I ask, what are you best know for? If you have a quick look through our general notability guidelines and drop me a message here with a couple of notable facts about yourself, along with some third-party references (see What is a reliable reference?) to "back it up" I'll see if I can whip together a draft article for us to work on? - It looked like a random imbecile drive by bizarre thing. I was more interested in the legal threat it contained than the rather farcical accusation per se. The IP is just a generic ISP. I could, were I bothered by it, submit details to their abuse team. But it's water of a duck's back to me, this type of childishness.

No, the reason I asked is because I was asking if you could help with our vandalism bot due to what is on your user page, you would have the technical skills as that is what it is written in.
I see now that it might have looked like cyber stalking or something, but I didn't mean to come over creepy or anything! And sure, you're outwardly an unusual person to ask, but many wikipedians are privately vandals. You could always save it for special occasions. 81.153.48.169 (talk) 22:18, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Wikimedia no longer uses visitor statistics from comScore. [1]
- You can make interactive graphs with the Graph extension. There is now a tutorial for how to do this. [2]
Problems
- Some pages do not turn in up in categories where they should be. This is because link tables are sometimes not populated. [3]
Changes this week
- The Nuke extension will work with Flow. This will make it easier to handle spam in Flow. [4]
- New file uploads will now be patrollable. [5]
- Internet Explorer 8 will no longer have JavaScript support. You will still be able to browse and edit Wikipedia if you use Internet Explorer 8, but will not be able to use some features. This can be solved by upgrading to a newer version or switching to a different browser. [6][7]
Meetings
-
You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 12 January at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
URLs in the recent changes IRC feed will no longer be rewritten to unencrypted HTTP. This could be a breaking change for bots dependent on the IRC feed. [8]
- The edit tabs for the wikitext editor and the visual editor will be combined to one single edit tab. You will be able to choose which one you prefer. If you are not logged in, your choice will be saved as a cookie in your browser. You can test the single edit tab. [9][10]
- There is a beta feature that adds links to the subject on other Wikimedia projects. This works much like the links to for example Wikipedia articles in other languages. It will go out of beta testing and be enabled for everyone in January. Wikis that don't want this can decide to have it disabled. [11][12]
- The difference between "alerts" and "messages" notifications is unclear to some. The developers want feedback at the Phabricator task or on MediaWiki.org so they can make this better. You can give feedback in your language if you can't write in English.

Subtle Vandalism issue
[edit]Thanks for helpful advice & links at the top of your page here. To test calmness, also good to try talking to a kitten. If you're freaking out, they'll run away!
So very much appreciate your kindly letting me contact you here. We chatted on Kiwi about this SVT brouhaha that's running my life. AfD discussion: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Manitonquat_%282nd_nomination%29#Manitonquat BLP Noticeboard: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons/Noticeboard
Unless I'm mistaken you're on GMT like me, yes? I'm signing off now but hope to be back online in a day or so. Thanks a million Horse Dancing (talk) 15:19, 15 January 2016 (UTC)
QUESTION: So here is the page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Manitonquat where the big honking banner has been placed at the top, naming me as COI. (Placed there, as I see it, in retaliation by disgruntled editor whose behavior on this topic has been widely criticized; if not amounting to edit war/SVT of the article in question "Manitonquat". Said disgruntled editor is also an administrator.)
After very kindly reviewing the allegation of COI and my response here, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Manitonquat (2nd nomination) you agreed with me that the COI charge against me in this topic is not valid (at our Kiwi chat on Jan 14, 8PM-ish.)
So does anyone have the authority to place such a scarlet letter on my forehead, because they decide I have a COI? If not, what is the process? I've answered the charge, arguably acquitted myself; yet this scarlet letter remains.
So I'm asking you, what if anything can I do to have the banner removed? Note, by no coincidence at all, the SVT charge against this disgruntled editor/administrator has been entirely lost in the shuffle and no one has responded. I'm asking for help to follow my charge of SVT to the article in question. How/where/to whom do I address that? Thanks a mill if you can help with these questions when you get a chance. I should be checking in tomorrow morning. Horse Dancing (talk) 14:56, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
- Hi @Horse Dancing: apologies for the lack of replies! Firstly, thanks for getting in contact - 99%[citation needed] of Wikipedia issues can be resolved with a bit of calm, collected discussion - and you've made the first step here.
- I don't personally believe you have a conflict of interest but I can see why editor(s) could come to that conclusion. I'm going to have a deeper check into the circumstances surrounding the tag, and should they not really pass muster I'll remove the tag and leave an explanation on the article talk page.
- As for the issue of SVT, I don't really know what I'm looking for so I'll need "diff links" - how to provide these can be found here.
- I hope I can be of some help, and I'll ping you with any further comments -- samtar whisper 07:42, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

Recent changes
- You can now follow when pages are added or removed from a category on German Wikipedia. The plan is to add it to Wikimedia Commons and other Wikipedias this week. [17][18]
- Administrators can hide individual entries of a page with RevisionDelete. There is now a button to choose "all", "none" or "inverse" in Special:Log. The article history will get the same buttons soon. Wikis that have done this locally with JavaScript will be able to remove that code. [19]
Changes this week
- You will be able to see the references when you preview a section you are editing. This will happen even if there is no <references /> tag in that section. [20]
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 26 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 27 January. It will be on all wikis from 28 January (calendar).
Meetings
You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 26 January at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- There is now an extension called ArticlePlaceholder. It can automatically generate content on Wikipedia with data from Wikidata if there is no Wikipedia article. It will have a tag to remind the reader it is not an article and ask the reader to create one. The developer is now looking for smaller Wikipedias that want to try the extension. [21]
- The OTRS system will be upgraded. The plan is to do this on 3 February at 08:00 (UTC). It will probably take 6 to 8 hours. OTRS will be down during the upgrade. [22]
- Users will soon be automatically congratulated when they reach some edit count milestones. [23]

Problems
- Sites with a
wikimedia.org
address were by mistake redirected to the Wikimedia Foundation wiki on 26 January. This included Meta and Wikimedia Commons. The mistake was fixed after an hour. [26] - Some users had problems logging in and out around 22 January. Bots also had problems and edit previews did not work properly. This was because of problems related to the new component SessionManager. It was undone on 23 January. [27][28]
- Because of new problems with SessionManager the latest version of MediaWiki was removed from the Wikimedia wikis again on 31 January. The new version this week will be without SessionManager. [29]
Changes this week
- The page history will get a help link. This will go to Help:Page history on Meta. Wikis can exchange it for a link to their local pages. [30]
- Notifications will only show part of a page name if it is very long. You will also have another way to mark notifications as read. [31][32]
- The Universal Language Selector input methods are now available with the visual editor. This means many who write in non-Latin scripts can now use the visual editor. [33]
- The visual editor will now give you more tools to edit tables. You can move rows and columns in a table and copy parts of tables to make new ones. You can also copy and paste more than one cell at the same time. [34][35][36]
- The visual editor has a new warning message when you leave a page you are editing without saving. Non-English wikis might need to translate it. [37][38]
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 2 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 3 February. It will be on all wikis from 4 February (calendar).

My reply
[edit]Why are you telling me to behave? I'm not a kid, I'm 30 years old. I've been using Wikipedia since 2004 when I was 19, and it was hip, but nowadays it's no longer hip with absurd changes and strict polices like writing about living people. I felt like they're making me the bad guy of the story, I'm not a bad guy, I'm a good person and a True American. A True American fights what he believes in, not siding with the enemies. I've been criticized because of my displeasure of protection policy and my edits. Is this supposed to be THE FREE ENCYCLOPEDIA? To me it isn't, despite being non-profit, it's like false advertising. No wonder why Wikipedia went downhill with the changes and their reputation.
Thank for your time and understanding. Have a great day! Spencer H. Karter (talk) 19:35, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
- @Shkarter1985: you are behaving very immaturely for a 30 year old, so firstly a grow up is in order. Why can't you spend a couple of minutes reading things we've been linking to you (which we've been doing in an attempt to help you) instead of going on about being a bloody "True American" and how Wikipedia is going "downhill"? If you think it's so bad, why are you still here? -- samtar whisper 19:38, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
- Additionally, what's with the mention of "enemies"? If you don't buck your ideas up, you're just going to end up being blocked for either disruptive editing or plainly for not being here to create an encyclopedia -- samtar whisper 19:42, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

I'm not going to be able to continue with the bot I'm afraid, but I'll make the bot code public so someone else/I can hop back into it in the future. I see you've been involved in a SPI, I had to bite my tongue not to make some rash comments regarding the reporter, but I am thoroughly disappointed in them. VisualEditor News #1—2016
[edit]Read this in another language • Subscription list for this multilingual newsletter

Now, you can also rearrange columns and rows. Click "Move before" or "Move after" to swap the column or row with its neighbor.
You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.
Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has fixed many bugs. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are improving support for Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Indic, and Han scripts, and improving the single edit tab interface.
Recent changes
[edit]You can switch from the wikitext editor to the visual editor after you start editing. This function is available to nearly all editors at most wikis except the Wiktionaries and Wikisources.
Many local feedback pages for the visual editor have been redirected to mw:VisualEditor/Feedback.
You can now re-arrange columns and rows in tables, as well as copying a row, column or any other selection of cells and pasting it in a new location.
The formula editor has two options: you can choose "Quick edit" to see and change only the LaTeX code, or "Edit" to use the full tool. The full tool offers immediate preview and an extensive list of symbols.
Future changes
[edit]The single edit tab project will combine the "Edit" and "Edit source" tabs into a single "Edit" tab. This is similar to the system already used on the mobile website. (T102398) Initially, the "Edit" tab will open whichever editing environment you used last time. Your last editing choice will be stored as an account preference for logged-in editors, and as a cookie for logged-out users. Logged-in editors will have these options in the Editing tab of Special:Preferences:
- Remember my last editor,
- Always give me the visual editor if possible,
- Always give me the source editor, and
- Show me both editor tabs. (This is the state for people using the visual editor now.)
The visual editor uses the same search engine as Special:Search to find links and files. This search will get better at detecting typos and spelling mistakes soon. These improvements to search will appear in the visual editor as well.
The visual editor will be offered to all editors at most "Phase 6" Wikipedias during the next few months. The developers would like to know how well the visual editor works in your language. They particularly want to know whether typing in your language feels natural in the visual editor. Please post your comments and the language(s) that you tested at the feedback thread on mediawiki.org. This will affect the following languages: Japanese, Korean, Urdu, Persian, Arabic, Tamil, Marathi, Malayalam, Hindi, Bengali, Assamese, Thai, Aramaic and others.
Let's work together
[edit]- Please try out the newest version of the single edit tab on test2.wikipedia.org. You may need to restore the default preferences (at the bottom of test2wiki:Special:Preferences) to see the initial prompt for options. Were you able to find a preference setting that will work for your own editing? Did you see the large preferences dialog box when you started editing an article there?
- Can you read and type in Korean, Arabic, Japanese, Indic, or Han scripts? Language engineer David Chan needs help from people who often type in these languages. Please see the instructions at mw:VisualEditor/IME Testing#What to test if you can help. Report your results on wiki (Korean – Japanese – all languages).
- Learn how to improve the "automagical" citoid referencing system in the visual editor, by creating Zotero translators for popular sources in your language! Join the Tech Talk about "Automated citations in Wikipedia: Citoid and the technology behind it" with Sebastian Karcher on 29 February 2016.
If you aren't reading this in your favorite language, then please help us with translations! Subscribe to the Translators mailing list or contact us directly, so that we can notify you when the next issue is ready. Thanks!
