Another article with hidden Harv/Sfn errors

[edit]

Charles Bruce Fergusson. I again cannot find the error. I suppose I also need to install whatever widget or gadget that finds this hidden stuff. And, the article's creator is the editor who created Don Aker... It's late for me but I *think* they are possibly creating the same issues with cite authors including author={{Text|Dalhousie University}}, author={{Text|The Brandon Sun}} , author={{Text|, etc. as they did with the former Writers Federation cites in the Aker article (plus they are also exclusively using sfnmp for all single author cites instead of sfnp, though that might not be an actual error issue? - Shearonink (talk) 05:08, 20 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, same nonsense format; Dalhousie University and The Brandon Sun are not the authors so we should not be saying that they are the authors. It doesn't really matter whether you use {{sfnmp}} or {{sfnp}} though the former is semantically incorrect because it misleads/confuses editors who are reading the wikitext so switching to the more correct singular form is a good idea.
Use Method 3 described at Category:Harv and Sfn no-target errors §Displaying error messages to see all of the hidden error messages.

OK, I'll muddle through. Thanks for the answer. Lol I'm learning Wiki-coding by getting it beaten into my technologically-challenged skull this weekend. Big favor...can you maybe post on the user's page about this difficulty with their edits? They're quite prolific and it seems like this style is their pattern, lots of repetitive & unnecessary "clean-up on Aisle 4" for other editors. - Shearonink (talk)
The claim: my technologically-challenged skull is self-defeating. Don't do that.
OK, pinging Editor MediaKyle per the above (you could have done this). There was also some discussion at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) § Category:Harv and Sfn no-target errors.

Hi there, thanks for the ping. I was previously alerted to these errors at User talk:MediaKyle#The Text template and harv errors... Apparently the solution is to just replace the text template with double parentheses, I've been picking away at that as I make it back to the articles I did that on... I do use the script but these errors aren't being highlighted for me. If it's causing a ruckus I can go back through the catalogue now and get rid of all the text templates. I only started doing this after another editor reformatted the references at Helen Kendall in this edit and I assumed that was the right way to do it. A tag has been placed on Category:DOI inactive indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

Should be Category:ZBL format to match the other cats of that style. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 22:15, 3 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Ummm, no.
Category:Zbl serves the same purpose for {{Zbl}} as Category:CS1 maint: Zbl serves for cs1|2 parameter |zbl=: the identifier value is a temporary value.
Category:JFM format serves the same purpose for {{jfm}} as Category:CS1 maint: JFM format serves for cs1|2 parameter |jfm=: the identifier value has an extraneous 'JFM' prefix.
Module:Citation/CS1/Identifiers does not test zbl identifiers for extraneous prefixes.
Trappist the monk (talk) 22:30, 3 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No, but it tests for the correct format, same as Category:CS1 maint: bibcode. If "format" is the wrong missing word, then "Category:CS1 maint: Temporary bibcode" or "Category:CS1 maint: Temporary Zbl" would be a lot clearer than Category:Zbl/Category:CS1 maint: Zbl. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 22:51, 3 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
We could do that. I would prefer "Category:CS1 maint: bibcode temporary ID" and "Category:CS1 maint: Zbl temporary ID". Because Module:CS1 identifiers modifies whatever error message/category name is returned from calls to Module:Citation/CS1/Identifiers, we have to change the cs1|2 modules so that we can make "Category:bibcode temporary ID" and "Category:Zbl temporary ID". One thing at a time: finish implementing Module:CS1 identifiers, then change category names in cs1|2 module suite and update the live cs1|2 modules, and last, move/rename whatever CS1 identifiers categories need to be moved/renamed.
