Hello, I am a Software Engineer and am interested in ways I can use my skills to support Wikipeda. If you could direct me to the right place that would be greatly appreciated. :) --Antonky (talk) 05:33, 8 February 2025 (UTC)

- @Bobsanski Not sure what you mean, afaict the stats in that article appears to have citations. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:19, 12 February 2025 (UTC)

- @Bobsanski That's reasonable, but it seems @Beatpoet found some more stats and added them after you removed that template. Football is not really my thing, you might find Wikipedia:WikiProject Football and its talkpage interesting. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:26, 13 February 2025 (UTC)

Question from Rickytexan1 (19:26, 20 February 2025)
[edit]Hello, I haven't used the tearoom in a long time, and I have really only used it once, so I am inexperienced with it. Today, I really wanted to get some guidance on where to learn about the appropriate use of the tearoom, and also, I want to suggest some content for the page on tinnitus, which I personally have. I had personal success in treating tinnitus with medicinal mushrooms like Lion's mane, cordyceps, turkey tail, etc. I also used Sam-e, for example. I didn't notice anything about those supplements when I visited the page today. Thanks for any help and guidance. --Rickytexan1 (talk) 19:26, 20 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Rickytexan1 Welcome! Assuming you mean the WP:TEAHOUSE, you can ask any questions you have about editing WP there, and people will do their best to guide you, sometimes to a better place to ask. For example, Talk:Tinnitus is the (first) place to discuss changes to the Tinnitus article.
- However, any addition/suggestion like "I used this remedy, and it helped me" will be rejected quickly. Any addition would need a good WP:RS to support it, and without such sources, you'll get nowhere. WP is extra-strict on topics like medicine. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:40, 20 February 2025 (UTC)
Hello!
[edit] Hey @Gråbergs Gråa Sång! Why does this file existed? →
This is the fake icon for My Talking Tom 3 and also, it's not real at all and what is the purpose for this file? 2001:D08:D5:22EC:4169:1D0:EB7A:14B9 (talk) 08:34, 23 February 2025 (UTC)
- Well, as you can see at File:My Talking Tom 3 icon.png, it exists because a user uploaded it in 2020. Why they did that, I have no idea, but see [1] and make of that what you will. You can try asking them, but they haven't edited since 2020. It's not used on WP anywhere (except my talkpage!), so if you want, you can suggest its deletion on Commons and see what happens. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:54, 23 February 2025 (UTC)

Question from Ray.d.white71 (11:29, 25 February 2025)
[edit]Greetings! I noticed in an article about "Planes in Media", a noticeable ommission.
The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy was the largest U.S. military cargo plane (not sure it still holds that title) during the Cold War, and was depicted in several movies, video games, and Television shows.
I would like to see this staple of military bases from my youth included, so I tried to add to the article. I am admittedly terrible at such things and just tried to include a link to a page with mentions of it appearing in different projects, but did not know how to include a photo as well.
As much as I love Wikipedia, I'd love to see this corrected, please help!
Thanks in advance, Raymon White --Ray.d.white71 (talk) 11:29, 25 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Ray.d.white71 Welcome! Aircraft in fiction, huh? Some would say nerdy beyond belief, but I started the article Shakespeare and Star Trek myself, so I won't say that.
- You made a WP:BOLD edit that you thought improved that article, and that's fine, WP is a learn-by-doing place. @Fbergo reverted you because they thought it didn't, and that's fine too, WP works this way, up to a point (more at WP:BRD).
- I have to agree with Fbergo here. You mentioned nothing about fiction, only added technical details that fits better at Lockheed C-5 Galaxy. Also, if you want to add Lockheed C-5 Galaxy to that article, you also need to cite a reliable source (WP:RS) that clearly states that Lockheed C-5 Galaxy was in fiction. You noticing it is not enough, a decent source, perhaps a movie-review or a book about disaster-films, needs to have noticed and bothered to write something about it. If you want to make edits that can "stick", you need to learn how to add references on WP, even on "harmless" topics like this. This is critical and I can't stress it enough, references are like our religion here. WP:TUTORIAL can help you with that. This page [2] does not itself count as a reliable source on WP (see WP:USERG), but perhaps it can help you find better sources.
- Hope this helps some! Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 15:19, 25 February 2025 (UTC)
Question from Mangoflies (02:52, 28 February 2025)
[edit]how do i find topics that are notable enough to make new articles for? It seems like nothing new is notable enough. --Mangoflies (talk) 02:52, 28 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Mangoflies To some extent "new" stuff that interests people is fairly well covered, and in general, getting to the point of WP:N takes time. So if article-creation in general is what you're interested in, my advice is don't think "new". I just stumbled on and made Tyler Saunders, awhile back Earl Bailly, and I know an editor who recently started Johnlock. If you like, look into British painter Peter Spencer, a couple of sources:[3][4]. He did Mouth and foot painting, and if you put some work and digging into it, he should be WP:N without problems.
- Sometimes you have to go beyond google and even into WP:PAYWALLED stuff. If your subject isn't brand new, https://archive.org/ can be very useful, and if you stick around, WP:LIBRARY will be available to you. A couple of places where you can look for inspiration:
- There might be other Wikiprojects that interest you that have suggestions of their own, and you can ask at their talkpages. Hope this helps some! Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:09, 28 February 2025 (UTC)

- @Acer-the-Protogen Thank you very much! "Sourcing provided by @Gråbergs Gråa Sång changed my mind." is high praise, and if I had a dollar for every time someone said that, I would have, counting Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/James Murray (comedian), 2 dollars. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 16:29, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
- 2 dollars? I'd be rich if I had two dollars...but jokes aside (or was that a joke? Hmm...) you should be much richer than that. People don't appreciate you enough (Acer's userpage |what did I do now) 16:33, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Acer-the-Protogen Well, I don't get involved in a lot of afd:s, and those are often motivated, the Flaa afd is not unreasonable. But "saving" stuff is nice when possible. One of my favorite WP- moments was when a lady came by the Teahouse and asked "Can someone please tell me what happened to the article about my husband?" Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Zachary "Skeeter" Reece was what happened, no mystery there. But we started talking, I did some digging, got help from other editors, she mailed me pictures of articles she had in a scrapbook (causing me to study WP:OFFLINE to convince myself that yep, that actually works!), and IMO Skeeter Reece is a pretty good article. Question from Kushal-2025 (07:38, 15 March 2025)
[edit]hello sir how to create page on Wikipedia --Kushal-2025 (talk) 07:38, 15 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Kushal-2025, hello! Making an acceptable WP-article without knowing how to edit WP is hard. A common advice is to "just" edit for a while first, to try to get a hang of this place.
- That said, your first hurdle is "Can a WP-article about your chosen subject be written at all?" Start with reading WP:BACKWARD. If you conclude "Yeah, I have those sources, no problem!", move on to WP:YFA. If your choice of topic fails WP:N, the article will not be accepted. If you decide to go ahead, you need to learn how to add references correctly, WP:TUTORIAL can help with that. This is crucial, and I can't stress that enough. Really. If you intend to write about a living person, read WP:BLP. If you intend to write about yourself (WP:COI), the short advice is "don't."
- Hope this helps some. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:06, 15 March 2025 (UTC)

Scary
[edit]This scares the bejeezus out of me. [7] Jenhawk777 (talk) 19:04, 17 March 2025 (UTC)
- Understandable. That thing with with the Ukrainian president was pretty bad, what kind of head of state does that? Ah, the good old times... Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:14, 17 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Jenhawk777 I stumbled on this by ADL today, warning, it's long. Now, ADL has it's own perspective on things, afaict criticism of Israel always = bad, and in their quest for WP-neutrality they don't find Hebrew WP worth mentioning. That said, there might very well be some good ideas in there.
- But I'd like to direct you to their Table 3 - Top 20 sources bad-faith editors cited most frequently in pages on Israel/Palestine. Considering how much editors like you and me love sources 1, 5 and 6, we might get ADL and the Heritage Foundation after us soon. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:38, 18 March 2025 (UTC)
- I felt embarrassed and ashamed of how he behaved toward The Ukraine pres. I couldn't believe there were people who supported such behavior! Something happened to my country when I wasn't paying attention, and I don't like it, but now I don't know what to do about it.
- The ADL article is interesting. They make a pretty irrefutable case. I have run into the behaviors they claim - cabals, bad faith, etc. - on some of the religious articles as well, so it's not just in politics, but most editors do edit in good faith, whatever their personal views might be. No group can be 100% anything. Even WP has some bad eggs, but that's the way humanity is, not just WP. Nothing anyone can do about that. People get passionate about things and use that as an excuse to rationalize what they know is wrong. Thank goodness for editors like you. Jenhawk777 (talk) 16:36, 19 March 2025 (UTC)

Help desk
[edit]It's only a few weeks since I started visiting the Help Desk regularly, and now I find myself wondering about Srbernadette . . . In particular,
- Does she ever see any of our replies?
- Does she know how to get alerts for them?
- If she does, does she know how to respond without messing up the page?
If she's struggling with things like that, it might explain why she doesn't seem to learn from people's attempts to explain things, doesn't thank the person who fixes something, and so on. It's not easy to learn from something if you never see it.
And if that is the reason, might we all benefit if someone offered to install Convenient Discussions in her user Javascript? (The flaw in this, though, is that it's not clear she'd respond on her user page to such a request.)
Or possibly she's just a person who can't follow detailed steps for doing a technical task and we'll all be a lot happier if we simply accept that. I have to say though, I think your diff showing how you added a category is a lot closer to what she needs than directing her to a longish page about categories and expecting her to absorb it. Musiconeologist (talk) 18:32, 28 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Musiconeologist I have seen her respond, which means she (can) see replies. Afaict, she likes the helpdesk because there are people there, talkpages are often unwatched. She has been appearing for years, sometimes as IP, and for some reason there are stuff like "undo", or add topic she can't or won't do. To some extent, I think she's become something of a mascot, but also annoying people with recurring issues, though I think most of us thinks she comes from a GF place. She likes the Middleton family, and I think she said once she was part of a school-group or somesuch. @Hoary, @Cullen328, anything you want to add? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:09, 28 March 2025 (UTC)

out of an image link or whatever. Some people simply can't see things like in a piece of code that anyway, and hoping they one day will is doomed to failure because their brains don't work that way. The recurring issues are helpful in a way, since it makes it easier to guess what she's likely to have got wrong and fix it. Musiconeologist (talk) 19:43, 28 March 2025 (UTC)

- Gråbergs Gråa Sång: Usually as an IP. Two recently posted pleas -- this and this -- are I think enough to show either a seemingly complete lack of interest in following tips (let alone acquiring the most humdrum of skills), or perhaps some odd kind of incompetence. And an extraordinarily high percentage of their edits to articles do no more than add to "society" trivia (additions that I'd concede can attain a kind of absurdity). -- Hoary (talk) 01:00, 29 March 2025 (UTC)
- I simply don't know what to say. She has put five digit years in year fields many times and other editors help her out and explain it, and yet she makes the same errors over and over. Perhaps she has a slight neurological glitch. For quite some time, years ago, I could not remember the name of The J. Geils Band although I could easily remember the names of other band members, at least half a dozen songs and big chunks of lyrics and so on, including the fact that Peter Wolf was married for several years to Faye Dunaway, one of my favorite actresses of that era. It was very frustrating. Finally, I said to myself over and over, "There is no first name. There is just an initial." That did it and I have remembered the name easily ever since. But I have no idea how to help her learn to remember. Cullen328 (talk) 07:01, 29 March 2025 (UTC)
- To me this all seems consistent with someone who either can't see detail in code, or sees it in the way someone with maths phobia sees an equation. I suspect she never will see and remember, either because it's impossible or because she believes it to be impossible. The five-digit years do seem like not being able to see there are five digits, though. It could even be a vision thing.Anyway, that's all speculation, really. I'll work on the assumption that she won't absorb explanations but that there's no harm in mentioning what the problem was. Musiconeologist • talk • contribs 03:01, 30 March 2025 (UTC)

[edit]You can look through my early talkpage editing history; I was an early adopter of "they" as a more forgiving pronoun. Frankly, I foolishly mistook your username for that of another editor. To be certain, I was calling myself an animal orifice, never another editor. FTR, I consider theleekycauldron a close wikifriend; she and I have been through some stuff together. We even got chance to meet and attend a seminar or two together in Indy. Thanks for your patience and courtesy. I'll take care not to make that same error again. [edit]Hej Brian, jag hoppas att du mår bra, I saw your edit on Inter Kashi FC (women) in which you removed two external links of the club. I read the rules regarding it. I think you overlooked the part that it's the pages of the club and the club's handles should not come under "maximum links" because every link gives the user a new interface and new information and content of the club depending on the interface or medium that provides different types of insights from the club. I am open to talks about this. Till then I am undoing the edits which I will revert if found unnecessary after our talk. Tills dess, ta hand om dig. Jag sänder mina bästa hälsningar från Indien. - @Rusalkii I don't know if it's something GA-people necessarily care about (an admin once told me it's not), but I like it when articles stick to one WP:REFVAR. So I would change the sfn:s to ref-tag-style, and so get rid of the bibliography. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 04:41, 9 April 2025 (UTC)
- That was added by someone else Special:Diff/1283638681 and I think it's probably not worth the implicit argument by reformating it regardless of whether I'm in the right. I don't love the split references/bibliography look either but I'm inclined to leave as is unless a reviewer actually complains. Rusalkii (talk) 16:47, 9 April 2025 (UTC)
Question from BentleyBaley (21:13, 9 April 2025)
[edit]Hi Grabergs (sorry if I did that wrong)!
I keep looking at Wikipedia, and it seems simply astonishing that people are able to find information for articles. Although I really like copy-editing (truly), I would still like to write some actual information. If you could give me some pointers to good research sources, tips, and (possibly) a guide to research on various subjects (mostly aviation), I would really, really appreciate it! --BentleyBaley (talk) 21:13, 9 April 2025 (UTC)
