Question from Mosena07 on Talk:Mokhachane (18:53, 1 January 2025)

[edit]

How do you add photos to the article because I want to add evidence of my findings --Mosena07 (talk) 18:53, 1 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Mosena07 On starting a new WP-article, take the time to read WP:YFA. On images: the basic rule of thumb is that any random image you find online can't be used on WP because copyright. New draft

[edit]

Hi Gråbergs Gråa Sång. I've just seen your post at the Teahouse about us sometimes starting new articles. I'm currently nearing the completion of Draft:Temujin Kensu, which arose in a similar way. I think it is going to be more controversial than many others when I do the DYK and I'd appreciate it if you could take a look and improve it if you can: WP:BLP and WP:DUE are obvious concerns. Suggestions for the "hook" also welcome. Thanks. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:06, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I think I saw a Teahouse comment on that one?
I read through the draft, impressive. Atm I have 2 points: I'm sensitive to WP:BLPNAME, and wonder if Merrill and Woodworth should be mentioned by name, though I don't know if they're actually alive. I noted that Joplin is dead. And, I reacted to "hypnotized", but I can't find that in ref given. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 14:46, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ping @Michael D. Turnbull Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 14:47, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No need to ping: I'm subscribed! Thanks for spotting that I'd used the wrong cite for the hypnosis. The problem with writing this is that there were too many sources! The hypnosis stuff is extensively discussed in some of the podcasts as it is frowned upon these days. I'll maybe add another cite for that. Good point on Merrill and Woodworth but their names are extensively used in reliable sources, even to the point where they could reach WP:GNG. I'll leave this for now and see if anyone else spots this when I move to mainspace (probably later today, although I'm short of "Early life" and "Personal life" sections which I'm tackling by contacting the IP by her published email address). Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:34, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Wide use of names in sources of course matters. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 15:38, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You might want Category:People convicted of murder by Michigan when you're in mainspace. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 15:56, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I saw that and used one of the people in that category to see how to do the infobox. Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:15, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at the draft now I've done the lead, I think the lead is too long. I'm about to move to mainspace: maybe you could trim it there, please, as you'll have a better view of what is and isn't important? Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:23, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's long yes. It's also not that easy to see "not that relevant" stuff. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:20, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
And don't miss this news. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 15:18, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Oh I know! Why ask it? Perhaps he is too and is feeling a little intimidated. The vast majority of WP editors are way to the other side and often write accordingly, so it can be a bit overwhelming at first. They are well read in Ehrman and little else. Mostly they are willing to treat me with some respect anyway - though there are articles I have learned the hard way not to touch. Who knows what his issue is. He probably doesn't know WP manners yet. Jenhawk777 (talk) 22:29, 9 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Channel Change (05:26, 27 January 2025)

[edit]

How do i create a new page? --Channel Change (talk) 05:26, 27 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Channel Change Hello! Making an acceptable WP-article without knowing how to edit WP is hard. A common advice is to "just" edit for a while first, to try to get a hang of this place.
That said, your first hurdle is "Can a WP-article about your chosen subject be written at all?" Start with reading WP:BACKWARD. If you conclude "Yeah, I have those sources, no problem!", move on to WP:YFA. If your choice of topic fails WP:N, the article will not be accepted. If you decide to go ahead, you need to learn how to add references correctly, WP:TUTORIAL can help with that. This is crucial, and I can't stress that enough. If you intend to write about a living person, read WP:BLP. If you intend to write about yourself (WP:COI), the short advice is "don't."
As an example, when I start drafting an article, I begin something like this: [23]. Get the sources in there, then re-read them, then start adding text, citing as you go along. Hope this helps some. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:25, 27 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Johnlock

[edit]

I was checking for other drafts before starting my own and stumbled on you mentioning that you might want to write an article for the Sherlock ship. It seems clearly notable and I've got a very rough draft brewing at User:Rusalkii/Johnlock, figured I'd drop you a note in case you were still interested in working on it. Rusalkii (talk) 04:28, 1 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Rusalkii Thanks for letting me know (and for the diligence: Talk:Reggie_Montgomery#The_merge_that_just_happened).
I remember stumbling on it in this book: [2]. The chapter is "The Gay Elephant Meta in the Room : Sherlock and the Johnlock Conspiracy" p82-94 and I can see parts of it in that link, maybe you can tease more out of it. It's on JSTOR, [3] but afaict, not "our" part of it. Here's another potential source:[4]. Ping @Computer-ergonomics, you might be interested in this draft.
Interesting, like Larries, this seems to be another LGBT young women fandom conspiracy theory. Is that "WP-worthy" topic in itself? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:57, 1 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The conspiracy seems notable (most of my academic sources deal with it) but I think it's best written as a section of the main article - any TJLC article would need to explain what Johnlock is anyway, and any Johnlock article would need to explain what this whole conspiracy thing was, and I'd sooner avoid the redundancy. Unless you meant whether "young women fandom conspiracies" are notable as a collective rather than individually? Hmm. I dunno that I've seen any sources talking about them as a general phenomenon, but it'd be an interesting article if they did exist.
Thanks for the sources, looking now... Rusalkii (talk) 19:42, 1 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Rusalkii I absolutely didn't mean that Johnlock and TJLC should be separate articles. Johnlock seems to meet GNG without problems, the academic sources are a joy to behold. When I nominated my Shakespeare and Star Trek for DYK the reviewer said "Though the subject seems odd, it does appear to have got a lot of coverage in books and TV, and therefore is notable." which I thought of as high praise. I'm looking forward to see how the article will mention toplock and bottomlock. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 22:42, 1 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't found any sources discussing that so far! Even a direct search just now hasn't pulled anything up. Academic interest seems very heavily focused on the queerbaiting/queercoding/TJLC + fandom close-reading angle. Rusalkii (talk) 23:10, 1 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Rusalkii I thought I had seen a WP-good source on that, but I can't find it atm. I might have thought of this [5], but the transcript doesn't work. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 23:35, 1 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Rickytexan1 (19:26, 20 February 2025)

[edit]

Hello, I haven't used the tearoom in a long time, and I have really only used it once, so I am inexperienced with it. Today, I really wanted to get some guidance on where to learn about the appropriate use of the tearoom, and also, I want to suggest some content for the page on tinnitus, which I personally have. I had personal success in treating tinnitus with medicinal mushrooms like Lion's mane, cordyceps, turkey tail, etc. I also used Sam-e, for example. I didn't notice anything about those supplements when I visited the page today. Thanks for any help and guidance. --Rickytexan1 (talk) 19:26, 20 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Rickytexan1 Welcome! Assuming you mean the WP:TEAHOUSE, you can ask any questions you have about editing WP there, and people will do their best to guide you, sometimes to a better place to ask. For example, Talk:Tinnitus is the (first) place to discuss changes to the Tinnitus article.
However, any addition/suggestion like "I used this remedy, and it helped me" will be rejected quickly. Any addition would need a good WP:RS to support it, and without such sources, you'll get nowhere. WP is extra-strict on topics like medicine. Hey @Gråbergs Gråa Sång! Why does this file existed? → This is the fake icon for My Talking Tom 3 and also, it's not real at all and what is the purpose for this file? 2001:D08:D5:22EC:4169:1D0:EB7A:14B9 (talk) 08:34, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Well, as you can see at File:My Talking Tom 3 icon.png, it exists because a user uploaded it in 2020. Why they did that, I have no idea, but see [6] and make of that what you will. You can try asking them, but they haven't edited since 2020. It's not used on WP anywhere (except my talkpage!), so if you want, you can suggest its deletion on Commons and see what happens. Question from Ray.d.white71 (11:29, 25 February 2025)

[edit]

Greetings! I noticed in an article about "Planes in Media", a noticeable ommission.

The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy was the largest U.S. military cargo plane (not sure it still holds that title) during the Cold War, and was depicted in several movies, video games, and Television shows.

I would like to see this staple of military bases from my youth included, so I tried to add to the article. I am admittedly terrible at such things and just tried to include a link to a page with mentions of it appearing in different projects, but did not know how to include a photo as well.

As much as I love Wikipedia, I'd love to see this corrected, please help!

Thanks in advance, Raymon White --Ray.d.white71 (talk) 11:29, 25 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Ray.d.white71 Welcome! Aircraft in fiction, huh? Some would say nerdy beyond belief, but I started the article Shakespeare and Star Trek myself, so I won't say that.
You made a WP:BOLD edit that you thought improved that article, and that's fine, WP is a learn-by-doing place. @Fbergo reverted you because they thought it didn't, and that's fine too, WP works this way, up to a point (more at WP:BRD).
I have to agree with Fbergo here. You mentioned nothing about fiction, only added technical details that fits better at Lockheed C-5 Galaxy. Also, if you want to add Lockheed C-5 Galaxy to that article, you also need to cite a reliable source (WP:RS) that clearly states that Lockheed C-5 Galaxy was in fiction. You noticing it is not enough, a decent source, perhaps a movie-review or a book about disaster-films, needs to have noticed and bothered to write something about it. If you want to make edits that can "stick", you need to learn how to add references on WP, even on "harmless" topics like this. This is critical and I can't stress it enough, references are like our religion here. WP:TUTORIAL can help you with that. This page [7] does not itself count as a reliable source on WP (see WP:USERG), but perhaps it can help you find better sources.
Hope this helps some! Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 15:19, 25 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Mangoflies (02:52, 28 February 2025)

[edit]

how do i find topics that are notable enough to make new articles for? It seems like nothing new is notable enough. --Mangoflies (talk) 02:52, 28 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Mangoflies To some extent "new" stuff that interests people is fairly well covered, and in general, getting to the point of WP:N takes time. So if article-creation in general is what you're interested in, my advice is don't think "new". I just stumbled on and made Tyler Saunders, awhile back Earl Bailly, and I know an editor who recently started Johnlock. If you like, look into British painter Peter Spencer, a couple of sources:[8][9]. He did Mouth and foot painting, and if you put some work and digging into it, he should be WP:N without problems.
Sometimes you have to go beyond google and even into WP:PAYWALLED stuff. If your subject isn't brand new, https://archive.org/ can be very useful, and if you stick around, WP:LIBRARY will be available to you. A couple of places where you can look for inspiration:
There might be other Wikiprojects that interest you that have suggestions of their own, and you can ask at their talkpages. Hope this helps some! Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:09, 28 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
