WikiCup 2025 May newsletter

[edit]

The second round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 28 April at 23:59 UTC. To reiterate what we said in the previous newsletter, we are no longer disqualifying contestants based on how many points (now known as round points) they received. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. These tournament points are carried over between rounds, and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers at the end of each round. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far. Everyone who competed in round 2 will advance to round 3 unless they have withdrawn or been banned.

Round 2 was quite competitive. Four contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and eight scored more than 500 points (including one who has withdrawn). The following competitors scored at least 800 points:

In addition, we would like to recognize Generalissima (submissions) for her efforts; she scored 801 round points but withdrew before the end of the round.

The full scores for round 2 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 13 featured articles, 20 featured lists, 4 featured-topic articles, 138 good articles, 7 good-topic articles, and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 19 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 300 reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after 28 April but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed in Round 3. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. GAN May Backlog drive

[edit]

Hi! It's been 5 months since I joined Wikipedia, and I would like to contribute the GAN Backlog drive. But the thing is that, I have never done this review thing before, so I don't know whether I am eligible for this(Am I?). I have read the 6 GA criteria and have a somewhat understanding of the MOS. So...Any guidance in this matter would be appreciated! Cheers, Warriorglance(talk to me) 07:16, 30 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You can absolutely participate in the drive! This drive is actually focused on those who are new to reviewing as well so it should be easy to find someone to help you out! I for one am more than willing to help guide you through the process. I wrote down my specific process for GAN reviews at User:IntentionallyDense/October 2024 GAN backlog drive if you want to take a look. Otherwise, for selecting your first article to review I'd recommend picking a topic you're interested in or know about. If you can't really find anything that is of interest I'd recommend doing a biography of some sort since they tend to be less technical. Also I usually try to pick a shorter article with not too many references to make things less overwhelming. Best of luck and thanks for reaching out! Let me know if you have any questions! Thanks! I will reach out to you when necessary. Warriorglance(talk to me) 06:22, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
One question, what is the GARC6 thing for images you mentioned in your essay? Also, I have chosen Edward Cridge article to review, so..feel free to give me comments relating to the review. Cheers, Warriorglance(talk to me) 06:41, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
GARC6 is media are tagged with their copyright statuses, and valid non-free use rationales are provided for non-free content; and media are relevant to the topic, and have suitable captions. So I make sure that the images are tagged by opening the image and looking for the copyright info. Then I make sure the photo is relevant to the article and that the caotion looks good (caption usually gives some context to the photo). It's pretty easy and I rarely find any glaring issues here. The things you want to look out for is images that don't have a copyright tag or non relevant images/captions. If you're unsure about the caption or image feel free to tag me or the nominator in the review asking for some more info. IntentionallyDense (Contribs) 16:29, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Just promoted that article to GA. Hope it's OK. I did not find any issues inside. If you find any issues I missed out, please mention them here. Cheers! Warriorglance(talk to me) 07:35, 4 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Your review looks great! I hope you continue down the path of reviews as it's a very rewarding thing to work on and you did a great job! IntentionallyDense (Contribs) 16:21, 4 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Of course, I will be participating in the backlog drive till the end. Warriorglance(talk to me) 15:25, 5 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good! Hopefully by the end you will be able to consider yourself an experienced reviewer! IntentionallyDense (Contribs) 21:03, 5 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Valharas (06:41, 3 May 2025)

[edit]

IntentionallyDense (Contribs) 16:43, 3 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Merci à vous,
c’est justement le problème pour mo: non je ne parle pas anglais.
C’est pour ça que je voudrais mettre la page en français.

Promotion of Heartburn

[edit]
Congratulations, IntentionallyDense! The article you nominated, Heartburn, has been promoted to featured status, recognizing it as one of the best articles on Wikipedia. The nomination discussion has been archived.
This is a rare accomplishment and you should be proud. If you would like, you may nominate it to appear on the Main page as Today's featured article. Keep up the great work! Cheers, Gog the Mild (talk) via FACBot (talk) 00:05, 8 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Death Race 2 GAN

[edit]

Hi just checking in to see if you had time to discuss the review of Death Race 2 for the May GAN drive Ivey (talk - contribs) 19:08, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, sorry I missed your initial message on the review page (time to trim my watchlist I guess) I’ll take a look over the article tonight to double check that it does in fact meet all the criteria. The tricky part about articles that meet all the criteria without changes being needed is that you as a reviewer still have to prove you reviewed the article. Usually this means saying “I checked xyz sources and found no issues” or “The article complies with MOS:LAYOUT etc…” IntentionallyDense (Contribs) 22:43, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha. Yeah I went through and did the steps in the table, do you normally post that as replies on the GA1 page? Ivey (talk - contribs) 23:37, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I do, that way people can clearly see I evaluated everything. IntentionallyDense (Contribs) 03:25, 10 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
