The Process of Composting

[edit]

The natural process of composting turns organic waste—such as leftover food and garden debris—into a nutrient-rich soil supplement. It is important for environmental preservation and sustainable waste management. Under aerobic conditions, biodegradable materials are broken down by microorganisms, fungi, and occasionally invertebrates like earthworms to create a dark, earthy substance that can improve soil structure, improve moisture retention, and supply vital nutrients for plant growth. From home trash cans and community gardens to commercial facilities, composting is a popular way to cut down on the amount of solid waste that ends up in landfills, where organic waste would otherwise break down anaerobically and release the powerful greenhouse gas methane. As part of global Earth Day events, composting is regularly advocated as a practical, accessible method to decrease environmental impact, enhance soil health, and contribute to climate change mitigation efforts. https://www.epa.gov/recycle/composting-home?utm_source=chatgpt.com https://essd.copernicus.org/articles/12/1561/2020/essd-12-1561-2020.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com https://www.earthday.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/EARTHDAY.ORG-Advocacy-Packet-Composting-2.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.comhttps://www.environment.sa.gov.au/goodliving/posts/2019/05/guide-to-composting#:~:text=Put%20simply%2C%20composting%20breaks%20down,the%20quality%20of%20your%20soil.
