I did not add the superfluous categories to my user page. If you want to do the work to find out how they got there, have at it. By the way, when I say My user page I mean the page I use to present information I wish to share. Did you use a bot or a script to make the edits? The editors of Wikipedia are people. Treat them as such. — Neonorange (talk to Phil) (he, they) 16:49, 31 January 2025 (UTC) —[reply]
Wikipedia uses a categorization system which aids its readers and editors. Categorization of a page is done by placing special wikitext: to place a page into category called "Example", the following wikitext needs to be placed into the page:
On categorized pages, the categories can be seen at the bottom of the page. Some categories are hidden from users by default. They can be shown by enabling the checkbox Preferences → Appearance → Advanced options → Show hidden categories.
Different categories are used for different kinds of pages:
Articles are put into categories based on encyclopedic topics, e.g. Biology.
Non-article pages are categorized into maintenance categories, e.g. for templates: Sports sidebar templates
Instructional pages are put into the category tree of Category:Wikipedia help. For example, the page Help:Category is currently placed into four visible categories:
Pages which don't align with the intended contents of a category shouldn't be put into that category. The page User:Neonorange has been incorrectly categorized into the following categories:
Addition of the following categories can be seen at the bottom of Special:Diff/1238902261, which is a copy of a portion of the page Wikipedia:Tip of the day, starting from the section "Alphabetical list of tips":
Thank you for the helpful reply. I see now that the collapsible help file pointers that I copy/pasted to my user page had categories embedded. I had not checked that new categories had been added. Thank you again for being patient. — Neonorange (talk to Phil) (he, they) 03:09, 1 February 2025 (UTC) —[reply]
Thank you, but no. I guess I have been using HotCat so long I had forgotten that adding categories to a page was no more involver than adding the Wikitext. Good weather and sunshine to you. — Neonorange (talk to Phil) (he, they) 17:28, 1 February 2025 (UTC) —[reply]
Your recent change to Wikipedia:Database reports is not behaving in the way I think was intended. Instead of it stating the time/datestamp of the last update to Linked misspellings, it's repeating the contents of that page, This table is generated by querying... etc to the database page when the LM table is empty. When LM table is populated, it's reporting nothing. Would you have a look at that and adjust? Thank you, Zinnober9 (talk) 17:39, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply and looking into this. Sorry it wasn't something simple. Glad the issue has been identified and hope the SDZeroBot footer is adjusted in the next few days. Cheers, Zinnober9 (talk) 21:40, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Idrk why you did this but why'd you edit my user page, just curious you might say something was wrong with the template but how'd you even find my user page? SpainMMAfan123 (talk) 04:58, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia uses a categorization system which aids its readers and editors. Categorization of a page is done by placing special wikitext: to place a page into category called "Example", the following wikitext needs to be placed into the page:
Pages which don't align with the intended contents of a category shouldn't be put into that category. The page User:SpainMMAfan123 has been incorrectly categorized into the Category:User templates spa in the edit Special:Diff/1283063785. This happened because instead of using wikitext {{User spa-3}}, which would tranclude the template, the whole wikitext of the Template:User spa-3 has been copy-pasted onto the page.
The clear intent of the cinema userbox was to place my user page in the category of film fans. (The userbox was adapted from a central source.) Your recent editing did not achieve this categorization, unfortunately. Since you begin a revision process, would you mind completing it? Thanks much. Pac Veten (talk) 15:26, 29 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Not having received a reply after today's unexpected edit to my user page, I have added the 'film' user category directly. If you have any further concerns, please get in touch via my talk page, and I'll be glad to handle any suggestions that you might provide. Thanks much for your help. Let's avoid circling where possible in this thread, if you wouldn't mind. Looking forward, if you have any suggestions for improving my home page, just let me know. I'm open to new ideas! Pac Veten (talk) 17:33, 29 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Please see the Category:Statistics sidebar templates page. These two pages which I had omitted look really odd. (I actually came to these articles from that page.)
Please don't pollute Wikipedia with your pedantic insistence that these two diagrams do not belong in Category:Templates for railway lines of the United Kingdom with the thousands of others for UK railways. It is settled consensus[1][2][3] that RDTs are a unique class of template that contains content, but on occasion are so large that they exceed transclusion limits are are therefore acceptable in main space. This, however, does not mean that they are no longer (Route Diagram) Templates. Your cooperation in this matter would be appreciated. Useddenim (talk) 04:11, 30 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
User:Useddenim, if they exceed transclusion limits, they cannot be transcluded. First two sentences of Help:Template:
A template is a Wikipedia page created to be included in other pages. Templates usually contain repetitive material that might need to show up on a larger number of articles or pages.
They are not included in other pages. The material in them cannot be repeated on other pages.
Useddenim, readers would be surprised by this category on these pages, because it has a thousand actual templates, while all other non-hidden categories lead to articles. Editors who are looking in this category for templates won't be helped by these pages being in the category, because these pages are handled as an exception, and cannot be used as templates (side note: corresponding Template:East Coast Main Line and Template:West Coast Main Line are already in the category).
How does keeping these main namespace pages in this category help anyone improve or maintain the encyclopedia? Without it, IAR shouldn't be applied. —andrybak (talk) 05:00, 30 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello everyone, and welcome to the 27th issue of the Wikipedia Scripts++ Newsletter, covering all our favorite new and updated user scripts since 2025! Boy, does it feel good to kick off the year with an issue. Yep, it's been a year since we cleared out the 2022-2024 backlog with issues 23 and 24! Good times. Though in this case "a year" just means... 6 months? 😯 The salience of whatever joke I was planning to make here has vanished speedily. Aaron Liu (talk) 21:00, 31 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Got anything good? Tell us about your new, improved, old, or messed-up script here!
WikiTextExpander by Polygnotus, is this edition's featured script. At the click of a configurable hotkey, this script will find and replace or link a configurable list of phrases within the selected text in all source editors (even in the comment/reply field!). Besides allowing the quick insertion of templated messages, this script greatly mitigates the WP:WTF? problem by providing both the legibility of familiar words and the convenience of shortcuts. And to those asking, the capitalization of "Wikitext" as "WikiText" was a necessary sacrifice for far-more-memorable acronymy.
CanonNi: AlertAssistant has been fixed and rewritten using OOUI instead of Twinkle's Morebits. Such modern, very tool. (Do note that the maintainer has since become inactive.)
NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh/AjaxLoader has been updated to use modern JS APIs that replace the browser's URL bar with the link you clicked on to load in place. The "back" (and "forward") buttons also work now. Cool, innit?
andrybak: Unsigned helper no longer shows an error when the message to sign was added in the earliest 50 revisions of a page's history. This is especially relevant to pages with short histories.
BilledMammal/Move+ needs updating to order list of pages handle lists of pages to move correctly regardless of the discussion's page, so that we may avoid repeating fiasco history.
In breaking m:Tech/News, Gadgets can now include .vue files. This makes it easier to develop modern user interfaces using Vue.js, in particular using Codex, the official design system of Wikimedia. Codex icons are now also available. The documentation has examples.
Appo/Globstory integrates OpenHistoryMap, updating the map whenever hovering/clicking on a location or year, the latter of which changes the map to be (hopefully) accurate to the year selected. It's pretty interesting.
linkinfo Somewhat similar to WP:NavPops, Awesome Aasim/linkinfo(pictured) provides a collection of links to replace the right-click context menu, presented beautifully.
PreviousDiscussions provides a link to search for your username on subpages of another user's userpage and talkpage conveniently.
Twineeea/noRedLinks brings you to the "read" instead of the "create" tab when you visit a red link. Contemplate life's mysteries as you stare into the blank! Deeply.
No, this is not going to be the enduring tradition of S++ for the future. This was meant to be a joke for the special occasion on the first day of the fourth month but was delayed by four months because I'm lazy.
