Gabriel Boss Chabo (born 2 January 1986) is a Swedish public figure of Syrian origin, known for his outspoken advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights. He became widely known after surviving a violent homophobic attack in 2020, and later for his public appearances and community engagement in Sweden.
Background
[edit]Chabo was born in Syria and moved to Sweden at the age of nine. He resides in Södertälje, where he has been active in promoting diversity, inclusion, and minority rights, with a focus on LGBTQ+ advocacy.
Homophobic attack and media attention
[edit]In 2020, Chabo was violently assaulted in Södertälje in what was described as a homophobic hate crime. The attack received extensive media coverage in Swedish outlets such as SVT, Expressen, Göteborgs-Posten, and QX Magazine.[1][2][3][4]
The incident was highlighted by LGBTQ+ organizations as a reflection of the growing threats faced by public allies and advocates in Sweden.
House fire and police suspicion
[edit]In 2021, Chabo and his family narrowly escaped a devastating apartment fire. Swedish media reported that the fire alarm saved the lives of his children.[5][6] According to local reports, the Swedish police suspected the fire may have been a targeted act motivated by anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment, due to Chabo's public support for the LGBTQ+ community.
LGBTQ+ advocacy and recognition
[edit]Chabo is considered a strong ally of the LGBTQ+ community in Sweden. In recognition of his efforts, he was nominated for honors at the prestigious QX GayGala, an annual event celebrating LGBTQ+ visibility and activism.[7]
Public collaborations
[edit]Over the years, Chabo has been photographed with prominent LGBTQ+ figures, including openly gay Swedish pop icon Jean Pierre Barda, in events that further reinforced his role as a public advocate. He has also been seen alongside philanthropist Michel Issa.
Media appearances and legacy
[edit]Chabo’s experiences have been widely covered in both Swedish and international media. His advocacy, survival of a hate crime, and efforts to bring visibility to LGBTQ+ rights continue to inspire discussions around inclusion and human rights in Scandinavia.
