The Windscale Piles were a pair of air-cooled graphite-moderated nuclear reactors at the Windscale (now Sellafield) nuclear site in Cumbria, England. They were constructed from 1947–1950 by the Ministry of Supply, primarily to produce plutonium for the British atomic bomb project. However, they were also used to produce other nuclear material such as tritium for . They operated from 1950–
