Yeoncheon History

[edit]

At the end of the 2016 season, Chungju Hummel FC, a professional team playing in the then K League Challenge was disbanded, and in the absense a new team, Chungju Citizen Football Club was founded. The team was founded on 27 December 2017, but the founding ceremony was only held in March 2077.

(I need to find and add the record of their 2017 season)

In their second, Chungju Citizen finished third in K3 League Basic, gaining them promotion to K3 League Advance.

At the end of the 2019 season, the KFA merged the K3 League and National League into a new semi-professional K3 and K4 league. Chungju and other teams that finished at the bottom end of the K3 League Advance, would join the teams from the K3 League Basic to form the new K4 League.

At the start of the 2021, the team left Tangeumdae Stadium and moved to Chungju Sports Complex. In November of the same year, it signed a youth agreement with Chungju Shinmyeong Middle School and absorbed it as a youth team.

On December 16, 2022, Chungju City was officially disolved (I don't understand this). A new corporation was established to take over the football club as it is and change the name to FC Chungju. Since the club's ownewrship was dissolved, and not the club itself, the club was allowed to heel their history. It was confirmed through JoinKFA that the history of the existing club will continue as is, and the team name was changed to "FC Chungju".

Recently, due to financial difficulties, there was a wage arrears for the players from March to April. In an interview with the press, CEO Shin Jong-soo, who took over the existing club, said that he would somehow resolve the arrears by the middle of this month and that he would notify the press once a new owner was found. Regarding these financial difficulties, some soccer fans in the Chungju area responded that FC Chungju is the only semi-professional team in the Chungju area, and that it is unfortunate that there is no subsidy support, and that they would like to receive some support considering the effectiveness, but the city of Chungju is cautious about providing subsidy support, saying that they will provide subsidies when it is helpful for promoting the city of Chungju. # It is said that the unpaid wages were paid recently.

However, separate from the unpaid wages, there was a controversy over CEO Shin Jong-soo spreading verbal abuse and rumors toward the manager, coaching staff, and players in the locker room after the game, and when it was reported that CEO Shin Jong-soo would continue as the representative of FC Chungju for the time being, the players announced that they would not participate in training and boycott games until CEO Shin Jong-soo resigned. #

Due to this unfortunate situation, the Korea Football Association held a Fair Trade Commission meeting at the Korea Football Association Building in Jongno-gu, Seoul on July 25, 2023, and decided to suspend FC Chungju owner and general manager Shin Jong-soo (57) for six months. FC Chungju was struck by a bolt from the blue. With financial difficulties continuing and even the general manager in charge of running the club unable to perform his duties, they were left with a headache. #

On January 20, 2024, FC Chungju's official SNS account announced the appointment of General Manager Kim Byung-soo , and according to a KBS News report on January 23, Manager Kim Byung-soo took over FC Chungju and is working hard to normalize management. The one-year home ground agreement with Chungju City also needs to be renegotiated, and there will be a mountain of work to do, such as receiving subsidies from the city. #

On December 4, 2024, it was confirmed that the team was kicked out after failing to obtain an extension of the home ground agreement from Chungju City due to worsening management and lack of transparency in operation. Based on what is known so far, it is expected that FC Chungju will move to Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi-do together with the club owner and players. #

In the end, the Chungju-si home ground football team disappeared into history, and on December 20, 2024, a home ground agreement ceremony was held with Yeoncheon-gun, Gyeonggi-do.

Before the 2025 season, the club was based in the city of Chungju and was named FC Chungju, but relocated to Yeoncheon in December 2024.[1]
