The following is a list of unincorporated communities in Southern Michigan in the U.S. state of Michigan.
The Southern Michigan region has no officially defined area, although the Lower Peninsula of Michigan may be divided into two main regions. The Northern Michigan region generally consists of the 21 northern counties of the peninsula, while the remaining 37 counties to the south can be broadly classified as Southern Michigan. This region also contains several subregions, including Central Michigan, Southeast Michigan, West Michigan, and The Thumb. This article does not include the 10 counties of the Metro Detroit region, which are listed seperately in the unincorporated communities in Metro Detroit article.
Excluding Metro Detroit, the Southern Michigan region contains 281 incorporated municipalities (124 cities and 157 villages). There are also 663 townships (596 civil townships and 67 charter townships), which are defined as unincorporated municipalities. The Southern Michigan region encompasses a land area of 24,055 square miles (62,300 km2), which is about 41.4% of the state's total land area.[a] With a population of 3,989,161 at the 2020 census, the region contains 39.3% of the state's total population of 10,140,459.
All unincorporated communities included in this article are those that have a Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) identification listing the location as a populated place that is not within the boundaries of an incorporated city or village.[b] Census-designated places are also classified as unincorporated communities, and Southern Michigan contains 73 of the 212 census-designated places in Michigan.[1]
