Development and composition

[edit]

While creating Hotline Miami, developers Jonatan Söderström and Dennis Wedin considered the game's soundtrack to be a priority. In an interview, Wedin stated that they wanted the game's soundtrack to be similar to that of a movie, particularly ones that Hotline Miami was inspired by such as Drive (2011). This would have been in contrast to a traditional video game soundtrack.[1] Early in development, the team put together a temporary soundtrack for the game, though failed to acquire the licenses for the music they were using and began searching Bandcamp for music that was available for free.[2] continue work later

The final Hotline Miami soundtrack contains twenty-two different tracks from several different artists.[3] It includes electronic, techno, vaporwave, and synthwave music.[1] The styles range from bass-oriented tracks like "Hydrogen" and "Paris" by M.O.O.N to more upbeat tracks like "Miami Disco" by Perturbator.[4]

Album

[edit]

The soundtrack was first released on SoundCloud on 25 October 2012,[5] and later became available for purchase through Steam on 24 January 2013.[6] In 2016, a physical release of the soundtrack was released through Laced Records. It contains all of the games tracks remastered and pressed across three vinyls, alongside four additional bonus tracks by Huervo, Jasper Byrne, M.O.O.N and Perturbator. Only 5,000 copies of the release were made, and it was funded by a Kickstarter campaign that raised over $75,000. A limited edition version of the release that came with signed posters and a plaque with the buyers name on it was also available for $1,420.[3]
