The Chechen civil war was a period of Chechen history where Russian backed Provisional Council attempted to overthrow the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria before the start of the Chechen war.

Background

Chechen Independence

In September of 1991, the All-National Congress of the Chechen People stormed a session of the Supreme Soviet of the Checheno-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic with the aim of declaring independence. The storming resulted in the death of the head of Grozny's branch of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. The government of the Checheno-Ingush Autonomous Republic of the Soviet Union was effectively dissolved.
