The New Irish Citizen Army (Irish: Arm Saoránach Nua na hÉireann), also known as the New ICA or simply ICA, is a paramilitary group formed in Contae Chorcaí on 15 July 2025 by Harry Burke (Irish: Anraí de Búrca) to combat the rise of the Far-right in Ireland.
History
[edit]The New ICA was founded on 15 July 2025 by Anraí de Búrca in Contae Chorcaí, two day-one members being Ionatán Ó Cuirc of Contae Thiobraid Árann and Diolún Ó Murchú. The Starry Plough flag and Irish Tricolour were adopted as symbols upon it's founding and it was also decided that the salute of the group be one finger to the forehead then pointed straight in the air before being brought back down to the side. Commandant-General de Búrca's sister and the first female member of the army, Gobnait de Búrca, joined the following day.
On 24 July, Commandant-General de Búrca decided that the anthem of the army would be "We're on the One Road". He decided this while listening to the song in the car on his way back from Belfast.
They are comparable to the Official IRA (post 1972) in that, though paramilitary in structure, they are a non-violent group.
The goals of the group are to create a united Democratic Socialist Republic on the island of Ireland, similar to the vision of James Connolly, hence their use of the name "Irish Citizen Army". This Ireland would have an entirely new Republican Socialist government and some of their plans are to have increased public transportation such as a metro system and Gliders like in Belfast, and for a law to be put in place forbidding private ownership of historical monuments (e.g. castles, manor houses) unless explicitly intended for public use. Otherwise they are to be protected by the Office of Public Works.
They share a lot of ideals in common with Republican Socialist groups like Lasair Dhearg but, unlike many of these groups, are actually supportive of the European Union due to the improvement that membership has brought to Ireland's economy. In this regard they are similar to the Labour and Social Democrat parties.
They also advocate for Scottish, Welsh, and Cornish Independence, as well as Devolution or independence to the North of England (Northumbria) due to the distinct and almost Irish identity the North has to the South. They also support Palestine and condemn the genocides committed by Israel, as they can see the parallels between the Irish struggle and ongoing Palestinian struggle.
They see the United Kingdom and The Commonwealth as outdated remnants of imperialism and colonialism that have little to no place in modern society, though acknowledge that independence would be meaningless unless under a Republican Socialist party.
Views on a United Ireland
[edit]The New ICA believe a United Ireland to be an inevitable eventuality, but that such a country would be meaningless without first a change of government. The British government is objectively bad and increasingly authoritarian (e.g. censorship of Kneecap and pro-Palestinian protests), but the Irish government is honestly not much better. It would be pointless for Republicans in the North to escape a Right-wing Capitalist government just to get their own Right-wing Capitalist government. No, that is not what Ireland's martyrs fought and died for. Figures like Connolly and Bobby Sands explicitly died for the hope of a Socialist Republic, a Socialist Republic which unfortunately never happened. And who is to blame primarily but Éamon de Valera who set the precedent for a socially conservative Ireland with the two party system we see today, both of which are frankly different fonts of eachother, those being Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael both of which are Centre-Right.
What a United Ireland would need is a Socialist government as was promised and even still campaigned for in the North.

New ICA Call to Action
[edit]Dear Comrade,
This is a call to action. Our nation is in crisis, our ideals under fire by the rise of Fascist and Far-right ideologies which seek to poison our beautiful Ireland with hatred, division, and strongest of all, fear. Fear manipulated by figures like Conor McGregor, for nothing but his own personal gain.
You are hereby called upon to enlist in the New Irish Citizen Army (otherwise known as the New ICA or simply ICA), the militant wing for those who hope for a united and Socialist Democratic Republic on the island of Ireland.
This is not just a plea, but your summons to rise up. Make our country whole, our people equal and tolerant. You need not be of Irish blood but of an Irish heart, to fight for what's right and defeat the Far-right.
Ireland has always fought back against injustice and prejudice for we are the Fenians and we are the fighting Irish. We honour those who stood against Franco in Spain, who resisted Blueshirts at home, the brave men and women who broke the chains of the largest Empire in human history, and who now rise again to face the modern jackboot wherever it stomps, like the courageous people of Palestine.
However some of us have gone astray, been tricked by paranoia and fear mongering, imbued with hatred for their fellow people. They do not remember our hardship, they march with our flag but they know not for what it stands. They spit in the face of migrants in doing so spitting on the tombs of those who came before us.
To aid in this cause all volunteers will be issued:
- The uniform of the New ICA with balaclava
- The patch featuring a map of Ireland
- The green and white Starry Plough flag badge — the primary symbol of our army
- Your first assignment under regional command
We are the legacy of Connolly, Markievicz, and Larkin. We are the New Irish Citizen Army,
And now as are you.
— Commandant-General de Búrca
