Robin Hilton is the host and Senior Producer of NPR’s All Songs Considered and helped create the Tiny Desk Concert series[1]. He brought in some of the earliest acts, including the second-ever Tiny Desk which featured Vic Chesnutt. On an episode of AD Open Door, Hilton describes how he named the Tiny Desk series, inspired by a band Bob Boilen used to be in called Tiny Desk Unit[2]. Hilton’s name appears in white bubble letters at the top of the shelves behind the desk, along with Bob Boilen’s and All Songs Considered.
Early life and education
[edit]Hilton was born in Kansas and grew up in the small town of Abilene. He attended the University of Kansas, graduating in 1992[3]. He often references the state in his work and how it was hard to discover music growing up in an isolated area before the Internet.[4] A turntable slipmat from Love Garden, a record store in Lawrence, KS where he went to school, appears behind Hilton’s name over the Tiny Desk shelves.[5]
Career
[edit]From the late 1980s to mid 1990s, Hilton worked as a news producer at NPR stations, KANU (FM) in Lawrence, KS and WUGA (FM) in Athens, GA and was a contributing reporter for NPR’s Morning Edition and All Things Considered.[6]
He later lived and worked in Japan for several years, working as an Assistant English Teacher and interpreter for his prefectural office in Nagoya, Japan.
After moving back to the United States, Hilton co-created an independent film, radio and music company called Small Good Thing Productions.
Hilton began working at NPR in 2000, first as a production assistant at Morning Edition before starting as an assistant producer for All Songs Considered in 2001.[7]
Hilton is also a composer. He’s written scores for film, radio, TV and podcasts, including the Weekend All Things Considered theme and NPR's elections theme[8], as well as the score for the 2024 PBS series Citizen Nation and the theme for The Foreign Affairs Interview.
