The Shadow Ministry of John Howard (1985-1989) was the opposition Coalition shadow ministry of Australia from 5 September 1985 to 9 May 1989, opposing Bob Hawke's Labor government. It would be the first of two shadow ministries for future Prime Minister of Australia John Howard.

Final arrangement

[edit]

Before being replaced by Andrew Peacock in the 1989 Liberal Party leadership spill, John Howard conducted a final frontbench reshuffle in preparation for the impending 1990 Australian federal election.

Third arrangement

[edit]

Following their defeat at the 1987 Australian federal election, the Liberal and National parties re-formed their coalition in a post-election reshuffle on 14 August 1987.

Second arrangement

[edit]

On 21 April 1987, Queensland Premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen announced his intention to contest the prime ministership in a campaign that would come to being as Joh for Canberra. It was a move that destabilised the federal Coalition and prompted Opposition Leader John Howard to undertake a cabinet reshuffle over the course of late April to the start of May.[1][2]
