Amina Abdullah, Ph.D.

Abdullah-Winstead, Ph.D. Dr. Amina Abdullah is an academic and human services professional currently serving as an Associate Professor.[1] in the Counseling Department at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. Before her appointment at Hampton, she held significant leadership roles such as Department Chair along with a faculty rank of Associate Professor[2] with Tenure at Saint Leo University, a private Catholic university established in 1889 in St. Leo, Florida, United States.
Notably, she is the daughter of Ali Abdullah[3], a US Air Force veteran and the former mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania, Braddock’s first elected African American mayor from 1993-1998. He was succeeded by his wife, Pauline Abdullah[4][5] who served as mayor from 1998-2005, and the current United States Senator John Fetterman, who continued the successful work that Mayor Abdullah started including the creation of a youth program and developing partnerships to revitalize the former steel town community.
Career
[edit]After earning her Ph.D. from Capella University, Abdullah held various positions with increased responsibility at Saint Leo including, Associate Chair, Department Chair, and Regional Academic Director. Prior to her tenure at Saint Leo, she served in a variety of faculty roles and other positions. She has been awarded as host of awards for her dedication to service and volunteering, including the esteem Service Award from Saint Leo and Pi Gamma Mu Honor Society[6]. She was featured in a special series on Black Entertainment Television (BET), which recognized her work as an academic leader[7].
Dr. Abdullah's academic career has largely focused on human services education, with a particular emphasis on program administration, faculty development, regional and global service learning, and self-care/wellness. As Department Chair at Saint Leo, she oversaw faculty performance, curriculum development, and ensured program alignment with accreditation standards. Her contributions included initiatives for faculty mentoring, enhancing instructional quality, and supporting student retention, particularly for adult and first-generation learners. She appeared on the "Saint Leo 360° Podcast" (Episode 37)[8] where she discussed the Bachelor of Arts in Human Services program, highlighting its flexibility, curriculum, career opportunities, and unique aspects.
Her scholarship reflects an interdisciplinary approach within the human services field, with research presented at national and international conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals, which can be found on Google Scholar[9]. Dr. Abdullah is the author of a series of books titled Their Journey to the Ph.D.,[10] featured on Amazon, including a special edition sponsored by Capella. She is also actively involved in academic committees and professional organizations, demonstrating a commitment to advancing the human services profession.
In addition to her contributions to academia, she is also a songwriter. She has written songs for Niah Rae[11] which are featured on a variety of streaming platforms including, YouTube, pinned under the name of either Amina Abdullah or Amina Abdullah Winstead[12]
Biography
[edit]Born in Braddock, Pennsylvania, to Rasheeda El (b. 01/23/44), founder of Custodians of Faith in Atlanta, Georgia, and Ali Abdullah (b. 09/01/1940 – d. 02/27/2007), she is one of four children, including her siblings Amira Webb, Ali Abdullah, and Ahmed Abdullah. She has two children, Ondirae and Donald, four grandchildren. She is married to Dr. Craig Winstead[13] (Craig N. Winstead, Ph.D.), the first African American Dean for the Robert P. Stiller School of Business at the esteemed Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont.
Abdullah received a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Human Services from Capella and a Master’s degree in Management and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, both from the University of Phoenix.
