Sonaggios is a 2025 Italian-Canadian documentary film directed by Pietro Mereu.
Synopsis
[edit]The documentary tells the story of two families from Tonara, the Floris and the Sulis, who carry on the ancient tradition of manufacturing cowbells, struggling—with two different philosophies—to preserve it from extinction. The history of this ancient instrument, which fulfills multiple social functions—sound deterrent for theft, calming for livestock, and symbol of honor and prestige for shepherds—originates from Tonara, a small town in Barbagia.
Production
[edit]Sonaggios was produced by Velvet Cut, Terra De Punt, and Productions Megafun, with the support of the Regione Sardegna and the Sardegna Film Commission Foundation. The film was entirely shot in Tonara, Sardinia.
Release
[edit]The documentary was selected for the 2025 San Francisco International Film Festival in the World Documentaries section.
Reception
[edit]Critics praised Sonaggios for its poetic and respectful portrayal of a vanishing tradition.[1] The film has been featured in Italian and international media outlets for its cultural relevance and cinematic quality.
Awards and Festivals
[edit]- Official Selection – San Francisco International Film Festival (2025)
