Erik Sigerud (born 14 October 1977) is a Swedish contemporary artist and painter based in Stockholm.[1] He is known for his layered paintings that combine figurative and abstract elements to explore the relationship between individual experiences and collective narratives.[2]
Early life and education
[edit]Erik Sigerud was born in 1977 in Borlänge, Sweden. He studied at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA) in Paris, earning a Master of Fine Arts degree in 2004.[3] In 2003, he participated in an exchange program at Universität der Künste (UdK) in Berlin. He has also undertaken further studies in philosophy and critical theory at institutions in Stockholm and Gothenburg.[4]
Career
[edit]Sigerud began exhibiting in the early 2000s, receiving a special jury commendation at the Prix Paul-Louis Weiller exhibition in Paris in 2002.[3] In Sweden, his early solo exhibitions were held at independent art spaces such as wip:konsthall in Stockholm (2005) and Gocart Gallery in Visby (2013).[3]
In 2016, his solo exhibition Grader av intentionalitet ("Degrees of Intentionality") was presented at Tyresö Konsthall, followed by Gränsdragningar ("Demarcations") at Rättviks Konsthall in 2018.[2] His 2023 solo show Between Appearance and Reality at Galleri Artem in Stockholm explored themes of perception versus reality.[3]
Sigerud's work has also been included in numerous group exhibitions, including the Liljevalchs Vårsalong (Spring Salon) in 2010 and 2017,[3] and The Map of the New Art exhibition at the Imago Mundi collection in Venice in 2015.[5]
Artistic style and influences
[edit]Sigerud’s artwork blends figurative and abstract elements, creating layered compositions that explore personal and collective narratives. His work often references family photographs, media images, and historical motifs.[4] His influences include artists such as Julie Mehretu, Matthias Weischer, and Albert Oehlen, as well as philosophers like Gilles Deleuze, Hannah Arendt, and Jean Baudrillard.[1]
