Parliamentary elections in Poland
[edit]Vacancy
[edit]In case of a vacancy during the term, a seat in the Sejm is filled in with the next eligible with the D'Hondt method (i.e. next with most votes) from the same electoral list as the departured member. This way number of seats apportionned to the electoral list at the elections remains the same throughout the term.[a]
When a seat in the Senate is vacated, by-elections in the constituency are held.
Electoral districts of Poland
[edit]In Poland, electoral districts known as okręgi wyborcze (sg. okręg wyborczy)[b] to the bicameral parliament and the European Parliament are defined by an act of national legislature. There are currently 41 multi-member constituencies electing 460 members of the Sejm (lower house), and 100 single-member constituencies for the Senate (upper house). In European Parliament elections Poland elects 53 MEPs in 13 constituencies.
Constituencies in local elections are determined by regional electoral authorities. All types of constituencies are further divided into much smaller polling districts known as obwody głosowania (sg. obwód głosowania, lit. 'voting circuit' or 'voting precinct'), which are permanent and remain the same for all types of elections.

Election authorities
[edit]The central election authority is vested in the National Electoral Commission, a colegiate body of 9 persons trained in judicary, that oversees all elections in Poland and determins their final results. The Commission operates with a administrative and technical support of the National Electoral Office. The Commission is represented in field by 100 electoral commissioners.
