Naning Derby (Melaka)

[edit]

The Naning Derby refers to the football rivalry between Negeri Sembilan FC and Melaka FC, two neighbouring teams from the historical Naning region along the Negeri Sembilan–Melaka border. Named after the former district of Naning, which once had political ties to Negeri Sembilan before becoming part of Malacca, the derby carries a sense of regional pride and local identity. Although not as high-profile as some rivalries, matches between Negeri Sembilan and Melaka are often intense and emotionally charged due to proximity, fan interactions, and state pride.

Meetings between the two clubs—especially when both compete in the same division—often draw strong local interest, with fixtures at STAR and Hang Jebat Stadium attracting passionate home crowds. The Naning Derby is a symbol of southern central rivalry, and despite fluctuations in form and league status over the years, the fixture continues to hold significance among fans of both sides. The rivalry is set to reignite in the 2025–26 Malaysia Super League season, as both teams return to the top flight.

Southern Derby (JDT)

[edit]

The Southern Derby is a football rivalry between Negeri Sembilan FC and Johor Darul Ta'zim FC (JDT), representing two neighboring southern states of Peninsular Malaysia. Though the rivalry dates back to earlier decades, it gained renewed intensity after JDT's transformation into a football powerhouse in 2013. Negeri Sembilan, known for their proud football tradition, often play the role of spirited challengers in these matchups. Despite JDT’s dominance in recent years, matches between the two sides remain fiercely contested due to geographical proximity, historical encounters, and the pride of representing southern Malaysia.

The derby is known for its passionate fanbases, with stadiums in both Paroi and Iskandar Puteri drawing large crowds whenever the teams meet. Beyond the scorelines, the Southern Derby symbolizes regional identity and football heritage, with fans often engaging in vibrant displays, chants, and social media banter. While JDT have maintained a strong upper hand in recent clashes, Negeri Sembilan’s determination to upset the giants adds drama and unpredictability to this southern rivalry.

Position in league

[edit]
  • Champions of 2005–06 Malaysia Super League

Negeri Sembilan won their first-ever Malaysia Super League title in the 2005–06 season under coach K. Devan. The team showed consistent performance throughout the campaign, finishing ahead of strong rivals like Perlis and Selangor. Key players such as Rezal Zambery Yahya, Shukor Adan, and Christian Bekamenga played crucial roles in securing the title. Their success was built on tactical discipline, a strong defence, and effective teamwork. The title marked a historic achievement for the club and elevated their status in Malaysian football.

  • Champions of 1991 Malaysia Semi-Pro Division 2 League

Negeri Sembilan won the 1991 Semi-Pro League Division 2 title after a tense title race with Sarawak, their closest rival for the top spot. On 18 August, both teams met in a decisive final match, with Negeri Sembilan needing only a draw and Sarawak requiring a win to leapfrog them. The match ended 2–2, enough to crown Negeri Sembilan as champions and earn promotion to Division 1. Key players included Miroslav Bozik, Robert Bozik, Marian Valach, Richard Scully, and Nazari Hussein.

  • Champions of 2021 Malaysia Premier League

Negeri Sembilan won the 2021 Malaysia Premier League under coach K. Devan, securing promotion to the Super League after a 4–2 win over PDRM on the final day. Led by captain Zaquan Adha, the team showed strong performances throughout the season, with key contributions from players like Alain Akono and Bae Beom-geun. The title ended their long wait for a major honour and marked a successful return to top-tier football.

  • Champions of 1948, 2009 and 2011 Malaysia Cup

Negeri Sembilan’s first Malaysia Cup (then known as the Malaya Cup) triumph came in 1948, when they defeated Selangor 4–2 in the final held at the Selangor Club Padang. It was a historic victory as it marked the state’s first major success in Malayan football, led by a team of local talents in the post-war era.

The second title came 61 years later in 2009, when Negeri Sembilan lifted the Malaysia Cup after a 3–1 win over Kelantan at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium. Led by coach Wan Jamak Wan Hassan, the team was inspired by key players such as Zaquan Adha, Aidil Zafuan, and Hairuddin Omar, who scored in the final. The win ended a decades-long wait and sparked major celebrations among their supporters.

Negeri Sembilan claimed their third Malaysia Cup title in 2011, once again defeating Kelantan, this time 2–1 in the final. Under coach Azraai Khor, the team made a dramatic comeback after trailing 0–1, with goals from S. Kunalan and Hairuddin Omar securing the win. The 2011 victory confirmed Negeri Sembilan's resurgence as one of the country’s top teams in the modern era.

  • Champions of 2003 and 2010 Malaysia FA Cup

Negeri Sembilan won their first Malaysia FA Cup title in 2003 after defeating Perlis 1–0 in the final. The closely contested match was decided by a goal from Khairul Anuar Baharom, giving Negeri Sembilan their maiden FA Cup triumph and a major boost in the early 2000s era.

The second FA Cup title came in 2010, when Negeri Sembilan edged Kelantan 5–4 in a dramatic penalty shootout after a goalless draw in the final. Goalkeeper Farizal Marlias was the hero of the night, making key saves in the shootout to secure the victory. The win added another major trophy to the team's growing list of honours during a successful period in the late 2000s.

Malaysia Charity Cup

[edit]
  • Champions of 2012 Malaysia Charity Cup

Negeri Sembilan won the 2012 Malaysia Charity Cup (Piala Sumbangsih) after defeating Liga Super champions Kelantan 2–1. The match marked the curtain-raiser for the 2012 Malaysian football season and showcased Negeri Sembilan’s strong momentum following their 2011 Malaysia Cup triumph. Goals from Shahurain Abu Samah and Jean-Emmanuel Effa Owona sealed the victory, giving the team their first ever Charity Cup title.

Country by the number of players

[edit]

Foreign players were officially allowed in Malaysian football starting in 1989 with the introduction of the Semi-Pro League. Before that, teams competed using only local players. The foreign player ban from 2009 to 2011 was lifted in 2012, and the quota has since gradually expanded.[82] This list shows the top contributing countries by the number of players who have played for the club.

Kit sponsor

[edit]

Warrix is a Thai sportswear manufacturer established in 2013, best known for supplying kits to the Thailand national football team since 2017 and several prominent Southeast Asian clubs. The brand emphasizes performance innovation with advanced fabrics and has grown into a leading name in the regional football scene. In 2025, Warrix signed a two-year deal worth RM 1.7 million to become the official kit sponsor of Negeri Sembilan FC, covering the senior team as well as the U‑20 and U‑18 squads for the 2025–26 and 2026–27 seasons. The partnership supports the club's vision to enhance its professional image, commercial strength, and competitiveness in Malaysian football.[83][84]

Main sponsor

[edit]

For the 2025–26 season, Negeri Sembilan FC is backed by key sponsors including Matrix Concepts Holdings Berhad, a prominent Malaysian property developer; MBI Negeri Sembilan, the state’s municipal investment body; and Negeri Roadstone Sdn. Bhd., an infrastructure and construction company. Matrix Concepts has been the club’s main sponsor since 2012, while MBI Negeri Sembilan joined in 2024. Negeri Roadstone, initially a sleeve/shoulder sponsor in 2019, became a main sponsor in 2024. Their continued involvement highlights a shared commitment to supporting the club’s development and promoting Negeri Sembilan’s identity through football.[85][86]

Sleeve sponsor

[edit]

For the 2025–26 season, Seremban Engineering Berhad, a local engineering and fabrication firm, and Gemencheh Granite Sdn. Bhd., a quarry and construction materials provider, continue as sleeve sponsors of Negeri Sembilan FC. Gemencheh Granite, which has supported the club since 2021, retains its place on the left sleeve, while Seremban Engineering, joining in 2024, remains on the right. Their continued presence reflects the strong support of local industry players for the club’s growth in Malaysian football.[87][88]

Back sponsor

[edit]

For the 2025–26 season, NSFC Sport Physio Centre and IRC Negeri Sembilan, a regional rehabilitation and wellness provider, continue as back sponsors of Negeri Sembilan FC. Introduced during the 2024–25 season, back sponsorship marked a new addition to the club’s kit branding, with both organisations becoming the first to appear in that position. Their ongoing support reflects a shared commitment to enhancing the club’s physical performance, medical facilities, and sporting standards.[89]

Each team is allowed to register up to 15 foreign players, but only six can be used in a matchday squad. This includes four world (open) category players, one from an AFC member country (Asia), and one from an ASEAN country.[97]
