U Yar (Burmese: ဦးယာ, also known as Aye Maung Yar (Burmese: အေးမောင်ယာ; born Burma) was a notable writer from the Tapawng-Nge to Nhyakyin-Chi Tapawngla region. He was born around Myanmar Year 1110 (approximately 1748 AD). He gained prominence during the reigns of King Singu and Bodawpaya due to his significant contributions to the Ae genre of literature.[1][2]
In Burma Year 1138, during the reign of King Singu, U Yar was honored with the title Nemyo Min Hla Kyaw Thu and was appointed as the head of the royal harem, serving the Chief Queen Mother Ma Uthu Gyi's daughter. From that time, he composed numerous Yadu (poems) and Ae (ballads) and authored the work Nyi Daw Min Nan Pyot.[3]
After the demise of King Singu, Bodawpaya ascended the throne in 1143 ME. During his reign, U Yar wrote and composed the 12-season Luta of Amarapura. Impressed by his literary talents, Bodawpaya entrusted him with duties at the court of the Crown Prince. Later, U Yar was also appointed to the position of Kwan Yedaw Kine and served as the governor of Myoukthama, where he was known for his just administration.[4][5]
Not long after, in Burma Year 1147, U Yar passed away.[6][7]
