The Shattering Peace is an upcoming science fiction novel by American writer John Scalzi, the seventh book set in the Old Man's War universe, and takes place ten years after the events of The End of All Things.[2]

Premise

[edit]

After a decade of peace, a civil war among the Consu threatens the tripartite agreement between the Colonial Union (CU), the Earth, and the alien Conclave. The main character is Gretchen Trujillo, who first appeared in The Last Colony and in Zoe's Tale as a friend of teenage Zoë Boutin Perry and is now is a mid-level diplomat of the CU.

Publication History

[edit]

The book will be released on September 16, 2025 by Tor Books,[3] including an audiobook by Audible.[4] In contrast to the two previous volumes of the Old Man's War series, the novel was not published serialised as an E-book before.

Reception

[edit]

Publishers Weekly wrote in a pre-publication review of The Shattering Peace that while the novel was light on politics, Scalzi leaned into many other series staples, and that the book would be a treat for diehard fans.[5] Marlene Harris predicted on Library Journal that "fans, who have been waiting for this book for a decade, won’t be disappointed by the latest installment" and that it is "highly recommended for readers who love broad sweeping space operas and science fiction with a high quotient of dry humor and witty sarcasm".[6] Kirkus Reviews called it a "classic Scalzi space opera at its wisecracking, politically pointed, and, somehow, fiercely optimistic finest".[7]
