Reverting

[edit]

Hi @The Banner - Here to start a discussion about the reverts you made to my template. As it stands the template just lists the reservations in alphabetical order, but they are innately connected to various nations that control and have sovereignty to over the territory. Not including them feels like an erasure, of disconnecting people from their territory. Looing forward to a productive conversation. Thanks! Jjazz76 (talk) 16:57, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  1. Your change was undiscussed
  2. Your change made the template unnecessary big
  3. Your change introduced multiple links to disambiguation pages
So yes, your change was not an improvement. The Banner talk 17:07, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@The Banner - ok so I'm discussing now. Unnecessarily big is subjection. Disambigution links can be fixed. At the very least the reservations of the Seneca Nation should be under one group. How about that? Jjazz76 (talk) 17:18, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
In what way can we design a template the connects the territory to the people that inhabit them? Jjazz76 (talk) 17:21, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
What is the benefit of that? The Banner talk 17:35, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@The Banner - Great question. It connects people to places. A reservation is a space inhabited by a group of people. As it stands this merely connects geographic spaces, but erases/ignores the people who make for their existence. If one were to look at encyclopedia, it would certainly be important information to include, and an encyclopedia that didn't include this material would certainly be seen as lacking. Jjazz76 (talk) 18:53, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That's the broader answer. The specific answer is that one nation has a number of reservations under its jurisdiction. Placing them in alphabetical order simply doesn't make that important connection. Jjazz76 (talk) 18:54, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Checking on in I noticed that all reservations have the name of the tribe/nation in its name with the exception of the reservations belonging to the Seneca nation. Is that correct? If so, a slight reorder is enough.

What I propose is:

This template's initial visibility currently defaults to autocollapse, meaning that if there is another collapsible item on the page (a navbox, sidebar, or table with the collapsible attribute), it is hidden apart from its title bar; if not, it is fully visible.

To change this template's initial visibility, the |state= parameter may be used:

  • {{Indian reservations in New York|state=collapsed}} will show the template collapsed, i.e. hidden apart from its title bar.
  • {{Indian reservations in New York|state=expanded}} will show the template expanded, i.e. fully visible.
I hope you can agree with that. The Banner talk 19:40, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I like that. Some might quibble with the "other nations" part but yes the others are all one to one. Could we put Seneca Nation in brackets as a link? Jjazz76 (talk) 19:47, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Made the adjustment in the proposal. What do you want to quibble about? As this is a test version (not live) we can tweak it to hearts desire. Maybe turn is around? Without the designation "Other Nations" followed by the block for Seneca? The Banner talk 20:06, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good to me now! Thanks for your hard work and discussion @The Banner Jjazz76 (talk) 20:38, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Version 2:

This template's initial visibility currently defaults to autocollapse, meaning that if there is another collapsible item on the page (a navbox, sidebar, or table with the collapsible attribute), it is hidden apart from its title bar; if not, it is fully visible.

To change this template's initial visibility, the |state= parameter may be used:

  • {{Indian reservations in New York|state=collapsed}} will show the template collapsed, i.e. hidden apart from its title bar.
  • {{Indian reservations in New York|state=expanded}} will show the template expanded, i.e. fully visible.
