unfit is for displaying square and bare archive URLs, when the underlying source URL is "unfit". It is not the same as template {{usurped}}
, see below when to use "unfit" vs "usurped".
- Square URL:
{{unfit|1=[https://web.archive.org/web/2011010101/http://unfit-url.com Example]}}
- Bare URL:
{{unfit|1=https://web.archive.org/web/2011010101/http://unfit-url.com}}
The template wraps it so future processes are aware it is an unfit URL. This prevents tools like IABot, reFill and Citation bot (and humans) from converting square or bare archive URLs into a CS1|2 template and thus accidentally re-activating the unfit URL.
It is important to use 1=
otherwise any "=" in the URL itself will cause a problem.
Unfit vs. Usurped
[edit]When to use templates {{usurped}}
or {{unfit}}
?
- usurped is a URL at a website that has been hijacked, such as a gambling site or domain reseller. The entire website is a problem because it's faking its true identity.
- unfit is a URL at a website that is real (not fake), but this particular URL is a problem for Wikipedia. Includes spam, malware - making it unfit for consumption, like a rotten egg hiding among good eggs.
Not be confused with an inoperable link - in that case there is |url-status=dead
or {{dead link}}
.
In the vast majority of cases "dead" or "usurped" are the correct options. There are some edge cases where "unfit" is appropriate. If you are unsure, use "dead" or "usurped".
How to use
[edit]If an unfit URL is bare or square, and is also an archive, wrap it in {{unfit}}
as follows:
{{unfit|1=[https://web.archive.org/web/2011010101/http://unfit-url.com Example]}}
{{unfit|1=https://web.archive.org/web/2011010101/http://unfit-url.com}}
If an unfit URL has no archive available, the URL or citation should be deleted entirely from Wikipedia as non-verifiable per WP:V. If the citation would be verifiable without a URL simply delete the URL; otherwise, delete the entire citation.
If the unfit URL is in a CS1|2 template such as {{cite web}}
simply change |url-status=unfit
and add an archive URL to |archive-url=
If a CS1|2 template and no archive is available, the URL or citation should be deleted entirely from Wikipedia as non-verifiable per WP:V. If the citation would be verifiable without a URL simply delete the URL; otherwise, delete the entire citation.
Decision tree of the above steps: WP:USURPURL
Conversion to CS1|2
[edit]It is recommended to convert citations using {{unfit}}
to CS1|2 eg. {{cite web}}
where it makes sense. Add |url-status=unfit
and the archive URL to |archive-url=
This template will add a tag to a source, notifying readers that this source is unfit. See also Template:usurped
