History

[edit]
  • I'm not sure of the relevance of the sentence Construction moved quickly. Is it rather significant to put this?
  • Work was underway in early 1953, though a plan to start in March was stymied by delays in receiving equipment. A little oververbose here. Might just write" Work was underway in early 1953, though plans to start in March were delayed due to late equipment deliveries.
  • phone calls reporting reception were fielded from various areas in Mid-Michigan – not sure about the use of "fielded". And also, should "Mid" in Mid-Michigan be capitalised?
  • The station increased its effective radiated power to 207,000 watts in 1954, which came as part of an expansion... – "which came" is a bit redundant so The station increased its effective radiated power to 207,000 watts in 1954 as part of an expansion...
  • Among its local programs was a local version of the Romper Room children's franchise with "Miss Carol" J. Hermance Kennedy as the host; Miss Carol started as host in 1956..., who took on the role in 1956.
  • As a UHF station, the possibility of a new station in the stronger very high frequency (VHF) band presented the possibility of financial ruin for WKNX-TV. In 1954, the FCC granted a construction permit for Flint's VHF channel 12 to Detroit radio station WJR, but this was challenged at the FCC and in the courts. – A few things here; Ref 11 didn't exactly support the first sentence regarding how the VHF band would affect WKNX-TV's financial prospects. I also think the information could be further condensed. Like maybe: In 1954, the FCC granted a construction permit for Flint's VHF channel 12 to Detroit radio station WJR, but WKNX-TV challenged the decision at the FCC and in the courts [as it would affect its financial prospects].
  • Lake Huron Broadcasting emerged as one of the most vocal opponents of the proposed WJRT-TV. – Curious, were there also other vocal opponents? Also might rewrite: Lake Huron Broadcasting emerged as one of the most vocal opponents against the proposed WJRT-TV.
  • In 1955, it filed with the FCC, charging that WJRT had chosen a transmitter site expressly to take away its CBS affiliation. I presume "its CBS affiliation" refers to Lake Huron's?
  • The next year, it asked the FCC to designate channel 12 as belonging to the entire Flint–Saginaw–Bay City area so it could apply to move WKNX-TV there, later simply applying for Flint's channel 12 itself. The following year, it requested the FCC to designate channel 12 for the entire Flint–Saginaw–Bay City market with the aim of relocating WKNX-TV to that area. In October, it instead filed an application for channel 12 itself.
  • However, the grant of channel 12 to WJRT was reaffirmed in April 1958However, the FCC affirmed its grant of channel 12 to WJRT in April 1958 I also note that the article mentioned about the documents sent for the grant to be carried out
  • Two years later, a supplement to an FCC order stipulated that WKNX-TV move from channel 57 to channel 25.Two years later, an FCC order supplement directed WKNX-TV to move to channel 25.
  • ...filed a $7 million antitrust lawsuit against the American Research Bureau (ARB), a ratings service, and WNEM-TV and WJRT-TV. – I'm a bit confused with the use of commas and "ands" here. I suppose the ARB is the ratings service.

Changes to here. I have not yet gotten to the ref fix of [5] or shoring up the VHF/UHF issue in bullet point 6. That would have kind of been self-evident in 1954, unfortunately. You misread the move line in bullet point 9 as moving geographically, not channel numbers. I have reworded most of these though and hope that will resolve any confusion by a reader. Continued:

  • With the separation from WKNX radio, channel 25 changed its call sign to WEYI-TV on June 11, 1972.Following its separation from WKNX radio...
  • The studio would be located alongside a new transmitter facility with an effective radiated power of 4 million watts, a 13-fold power increase....radiated power of 4 million watts—a 13-fold increase. Use en or em-dash
  • The upgrade made WEYI-TV among the most powerful UHF stations in the country, broadcasting from the tallest structure in Michigan. The upgrade positioned WEYI-TV as one of the most powerful UHF stations...
  • For 46 days in 1976, WEYI-TV operated at half power due to a technical fault; having received no comments from viewers then or during a January 1977 incident when utility Consumers Energy instructed major electricity consumers to reduce their energy usage, the station applied for permanent authority to reduce its power, conserving 153,000 kilowatt-hours of energy a month – very lengthy. Suggest splitting
  • The Rust Craft board approved of the sale that September for a total price of approximately $69 million. I think this could be further condensed to: The Rust Craft board approved the $69 million sale in September.
  • Also I suggest splitting from the subsequent sentence and begin with "However". I.e. However, soaring broadcast property prices and objections from two Rust Craft directors, who were seeking a higher return, delayed the deal and drove up its price.
  • to bolstering the very small I'm not so sure of the use of "very" here. How small was it, really?
  • Even after the substantial power increase gave it a coverage area comparable to those of WNEM-TV and WJRT-TV and the 1979 Ziff-Davis investment improved the news operation, WEYI-TV remained stubbornly in third place for local news. This sentence is a bit way too lengthy and at bits unencyclopedic. Suggest a rewrite
  • The 11 p.m. news was dropped in 1989 due to continued low ratings; while management at the time stated a desire to restore late news within six to eight months,[46] this never came to pass, and it was newsworthy when the station aired a late newscast for one week in August 1992 to cover the Buick Open and local elections.
    • I felt this part: this never came to pass, and it was newsworthy a bit crossing into WP:SYNTH
    • Rewrite to: The 11 p.m. news was dropped in 1989 due to continued low ratings. The management at the time desired/planned to restore late news within six to eight months. However he station only aired a late newscast for one week in August 1992 to cover the Buick Open and local elections.
    • Might also suggest wikilinking what the local elections were
  • More or less by default Unsure of the use of "More or less" here
  • Two years passed before channel 46 itself began broadcasting as WBSF in September 2006 I think "two years passed" is a bit redundant since you state the date after that.
  • However, due to FCC duopoly regulations, since Sinclair already owns Fox affiliate WSMH, – Might suggest swapping these two clauses
  • For nearly ten years prior to that date "to that date" is redundant.

Lead

[edit]
  • Owned by Howard Stirk Holdings, WEYI-TV is operated by Sinclair Broadcast Group via a shared services agreement (SSA) alongside Flint–licensed Fox affiliate WSMH (channel 66), owned by Sinclair, and Bay City–licensed CW affiliate WBSF (channel 46), owned by Cunningham Broadcasting and operated by Sinclair under a separate SSA. I hope there's some way to split this up, but even then, it's also understandable.
  • However, by this point, the station was an entrenched distant third in local news ratings; by 1989, the station only had one regular daily newscast. However, the station remained in the third place in local news ratings and, by 1989, was airing only one regular daily newscast.
  • "In an unrelated move" is a bit redundant

References and spot checks

[edit]
  • Per this version
  • Refs 4, 6, 7, 10, 14 check out
  • Ref 5 does not indicate there were no other applicants
  • For newspaper clippings from genealogybank.com, for example, I would encourage if you add the via parameter. However, it's not necessary at the GA stage

More to come.--ZKang123 (talk · contribs) 10:10, 14 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Continued per this version

  • Refs 25, 30, 39, 42, 48, 85 check out
  • Title in Ref 79 "UPDATED" should be in lower caps. Might also suggest adding a page parameter
  • I need a citation that Sinclair already owns Fox affiliate WSMH, because Ref 80 does not really mention it except in a comment.
