Name Change
[edit]To avoid possible rejection by the AEC, the name of the party has been changed to "Palmer United Party" http://www.theage.com.au/opinion/political-news/uap-renamed-as-palmer-united-party-20130512-2jfml.html — Preceding unsigned comment added by Flat Out (talk • contribs) 2013-05-12T03:44:02

Far-right?
[edit]@GlowstoneUnknown: the sourcing for calling UAP "far-right" seems a bit thin. The first is from The Guardian[1] but it's only in the headline (added by a subeditor?) and doesn't actually say the UAP is far right. The second reference (from The Times)[2] talks about a "far-right election campaign" in the headline, and talks about Palmer's "disaffected far-right support" in the body. But that could mean that Palmer/UAP was supported by the far right, and their campaign was playing to that support - not necessary that the party was far-right itself. (Again, the headline could just have picked up the word in body.) Hence, we need better sourcing. StAnselm (talk) 13:17, 11 April 2025 (UTC)
- Let me just have a quick look for some new sources, give me a couple of minutes. – GlowstoneUnknown (Talk) 13:24, 11 April 2025 (UTC)
- After a quick search I think I've found some better sources, let me know what you think: [3] [4] [5]. – GlowstoneUnknown (Talk) 13:32, 11 April 2025 (UTC)
- Obviously, the book would be perfect if it actually covers UAP (we would need a page number). I'm not sure about Crikey: it's not listed in Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Perennial sources, only because the rest of the world doesn't know about it. It comes very close to calling UAP "far-right", but didn't come right out and say it. Similarly The Conversation (which is explicitly allowed at WP:RSP) doesn't come right out and say it - they seem to be tiptoeing around the issue. StAnselm (talk) 13:41, 11 April 2025 (UTC)
- Re-reading the preview pdf of that book, seems to be another "tiptoe around" as you put it, you're welcome to check the preview pdf yourself if you want to though, it's on page 4. I may have some other sources however that I found in the meantime which seem to me to be more suitable [6] [7] – GlowstoneUnknown (Talk) 14:01, 11 April 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, the Yahoo source is explicit; I can't read The Australian one because it's paywalled (though it looks like an editorial). I can't see page 4 of the book, though I note the first page of the first chapter ("The electoral failure of far-right parties in Australia") lists a whole lot of parties but not UAP. Anyway, it does look like there was a shift: UAP started as "right wing" and drifted to the "far right" around 2020 or 2021. Which would mean "right to far-right" is appropriate for the infobox, but it does need to be shored up a bit. StAnselm (talk) 16:04, 11 April 2025 (UTC)
- Oh sorry about that The Australian one, here's a paywall-free version [8], hope it works. Let me know if you think it's worth adding. – GlowstoneUnknown (Talk) 00:06, 12 April 2025 (UTC)
- Note how it calls the Greens "far left"! Sounds like centrist propaganda to me! StAnselm (talk) 00:56, 12 April 2025 (UTC)
- Ah that's true, maybe best to leave it out then. – GlowstoneUnknown (Talk) 00:57, 12 April 2025 (UTC)
