Awkward Sentence

[edit]

"The commission gave several estimates ranging from 75 to 300 dead.[23][24]"

The above sentence strikes me as awkwardly worded.

Ref [23] is to p 123 of the Commission's report which actually reads:

"There were an undetermined number of deaths, both black and white, with estimates ranging from the official count of 36 to approximately 300."

Ref [24] is to an opinion piece by W White which reads:

"Fifty whites and between 150 and 200 Negroes is much nearer the actual number of deaths".

The second ref seems superfluous since these numbers are included within the first reference.

In the sentence itself the word 'gave' suggests or implies that the Commission itself was giving these estimates. Th Commission was however simply reporting the existence of various estimates made by others.

May I suggest rewording the sentence to read:

"The commission reported estimates ranging from 36 up to around 300 dead.[23]" 78.147.107.79 (talk) 16:15, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Thank you for the helpful suggestion. A. Randomdude0000 (talk) 16:35, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
