Splitting into two separate outbreaks
[edit]So I recently looked at the NCEI list for 2024’s events, and what was interesting to me is that they refer to the outbreak sequence as two separate outbreaks, the May 19–21 outbreak with only 5 deaths (per Greenfield), and then another entry for the 25th and 26th. Given this is an official source from NOAA indicating this, should we split the sequence into two seperate pages:
- Tornado outbreak of May 19–22, 2024 and List of tornadoes in the outbreak of May 19–22, 2024
- Tornado outbreak of May 25–27, 2024 and List of tornadoes in the outbreak of May 25–27, 2024
The 23rd and 24th were mainly held as a result of some landspouts and derecho-related weak tornadoes , and thus are not representative of the outbreak. Additionally, meteorologist Thomas P. Grazulis also has the 25-27 outbreak as separate (couldn’t find anything for 19-21) for his OIS score (proof). As such, I think it might be better to consider this as two outbreaks (the confirmed tornadoes are all from the second outbreak too except Greenfield), so this seems like it is WP:PRIMARYTOPIC to refer to these as two separate outbreaks with separate pages. Thoughts? MarioProtIV (talk/contribs) 01:14, 12 March 2025 (UTC)
- Landspouts, really? Split. Departure– (talk) 01:20, 12 March 2025 (UTC)
- I should’ve clarified it was some landspouts and weaker tornadoes from derecho’s and rarely discussed at all, so not sure if that changes your positioning. A look at List of tornadoes in the outbreak sequence of May 19–27, 2024 makes the distinction of two separate outbreaks pretty obvious. --MarioProtIV (talk/contribs) 01:29, 12 March 2025 (UTC)
- May 22 was more of a pain than it was "important". If it happened in a vaccuum it might get a single sentence on Tornadoes of 2024. Even if it was technically an outbreak and/or a derecho, it really doesn't cut it for me to glue the Greenfield and Valley View outbreaks together. Departure– (talk) 01:34, 12 March 2025 (UTC)

- Support the split - two different meteorological setups I believe. Wildfireupdateman :) (talk) 02:43, 12 March 2025 (UTC)
- Weak support split per those above. EF5 11:39, 12 March 2025 (UTC)
- Just in case some want to see what it would look like, I created two drafts in my userspace for May 19–22 and May 25–27. For the most part these are pretty much finalized and ready, but I will wait out the vote before doing anything with them if consensus to split is formed.
