Poor phrasing in Opening Section

See phrasing of:

". When they escaped to Union lines or federal forces (including now-former slaves) advanced south, emancipation occurred without any compensation to the former owners."

This sentence is unclear and grammatically incorrect, because it is unclear who "advanced south" as the Union Lines and federal forces are the object of the first clause, but presumably are intended to be the subject of the advancement south.
