Sloppy research or reporting that has been repeated often

In their 2012 obituary, The Daily Star wrote:

Subhash ... made his first film Abirbhab. The movie ... fetched him a prestigious award at the Frankfurt Film Festival.[1]

There are several problems with this:

Abirbhab (1968) wasn't the first film Dutta directed, Sutorang (1964) was.
In 1960s Frankfurt there was no "Frankfurt Film Festival", there was a biannual (roughly) "Asiatic Film Week".
The Asiatic Film Week was not a prestigious festival and did not give prestigious awards. It did not give prizes at all until 1965, when the Fédération Internationale des Ciné-Clubs (FICC) gave an award to the Russian film Heat. The Asiatic Film Week was known for its unusual offerings from countries overlooked by competitive festivals.
Contemporary sources such as Variety don't mention Abirbhab or Subhas Dutta in connection with the 1970 Asiatic Film Week (the first one after Abirbhab was made). Sources predating the obituary in The Daily Star, such as the International Film Guide 1980 and Banglapedia, 2nd edition (2012), don't mention a connection either.

Most likely, The Daily Star conflated Abirbhab with Sutorang (So Is the Way), which was shown at the 1965 Asiatic Film Week (in untranslated Urdu). I can find no record in contemporary sources that Sutorang won the "second prize", but I suppose if Heat won the only prize, then all the other films tied for second.

Because of the above problems, I'm removing from the article the statement: "His movie Abirbhab won a prestigious award at the Frankfurt Film Festival". Anyone who can cite a pre-2012 source for the statement is welcome to add it back, but beware of circular reporting. --Worldbruce (talk) 06:49, 26 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
