One Big Beautiful Bill Act

[edit]

I just added what appears to be the first update to this page based on provisions of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, ironically in the 2010's section because it made permanent the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (2017) exclusion from income tax for discharges due to death or disability that would have expired at the end of this year. (I received a discharge due to disability in 2023, but due to a "monitoring period" requirement it won't be final until 2026, which the IRS treats as the date of discharge; I will be directly benefited by that provision. I didn't add the caveat added by the OBBBA that you must use your Social Security number on your tax return to qualify; IMO that will affect few people -- undocumented immigrants, the primary target of that requirement, generally don't qualify for Federal student loans, though they could get private ones and/or be married to a spouse who gets Federal loans -- but if an expert here thinks that's important, go right ahead.) I suggest others with a deeper knowledge of the subject look at the reference I added there, and preferably others as well, to see what other changes need to be made by this article as a result of the OBBBA. -- RBBrittain (talk) 00:36, 9 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The passage added was not really necessary. Remove the statement about expiration and there is no need to include the statement about its being made permanent. If there are changes due to the BBB that should be incorporated into the article, I expect that we will soon find them discussed on possible sources that better fit WP:RS. Suggest merging article about student loan default

[edit]

The article at student loan default in the United States is much shorter and less detailed than the material on that topic in this article. It makes more sense to cover that topic in context here instead of splitting it off. I recommend merging any useful material into this article and redirecting that article here. Support the merge; Thanks for noticing this, I didn't realize that that article existed. ---Avatar317(talk) 00:31, 2 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Support I'm not sure how much from that article can be merged but what can be merged should. ElKevbo (talk) 01:42, 2 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
