Informing about the candidates
[edit]Our job is to inform people. The 2024 election page shows Harris and Trump at the top. Therefore, we are going based on the assumption that one of those two will be sworn in. 192.42.55.22 (talk) 03:10, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
- Correct on the first sentence. Correct on the second. Incorrect on the third. Wikipedia is not a crystal ball. While we can probably say (cited to a reliable source) that it is likely that Harris or Trump will be the next president, we are not in the business of predicting the future. It would not at all be "inform[ing] people" to assert something as fact when it is within the realm of possibility that it will not occur. We don't even make the assumption that the inauguration will happen at all. That's why we say "is expected to take the oath of office on that day", since no one can give a 100% guarantee that a president will be inaugurated on January 20, 2025. For Wikipedia's purposes, there is a big difference between "almost definitely will happen" and "will happen". -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe) 05:42, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
Financing?
[edit]According to Swedish (!) media, the fundraising and financing of the presidential inauguration funds are important both in influencing the incoming President and in monetary numbers. It is however very unclear in foregin media how this relates to the actual inauguration. Is it part of the official set up, or is it part of the surrounding events (the other balls etc)? I guess what I'm asking is whether the fundraisign is something that should be discussed in this article, or if there's a better article for that kind of data? AI-generated summary
[edit]Pretty sure the section Second_inauguration_of_Donald_Trump#Inauguration_boycott is an AI-generated summary of [2] The forced balance ('Despite the boycott'), summarizing writing style ('Various factors') and describing a mildly ironic statement ("For somebody who he said he's going to lock me up, I don't see the excitement in going to see his inauguration") explicitly as 'humorous' are tell-tale. Can we get rid of the boycott part?
[edit]I've looked through basically every modern inauguration and I cannot find any specific tab for boycotts being made, why is it even there? It is really not that important to the inuguration itself, I feel that it violates the neutrality rule. Jjbomb (talk) 19:40, 8 January 2025 (UTC)
- Are there other examples of an inauguration that has been boycotted? Or is this the first instance? -- Zanimum (talk) 01:17, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
- Many, all the way back to John Quincy Adams. It’s not notable Lepew57 (talk) 17:18, 20 January 2025 (UTC)
- I don’t believe we need to remove the boycott section entirely, but its size should be reduced. The decision of 6 or 7 members of the U.S. Congress to boycott or not attend doesn’t seem significant enough to justify the current amount of space it occupies, as it gives the issue WP:UNDUE weight in my opinion. Is this entry appropriate before Monday?
[edit]In Wikinews, I agree with it as a topic for a page, but all of this information is speculative at best, regardless of if it all comes true. Even in a forum that is very specific about verifiability, it's just interesting to me how quick we are to defend this one man's excusal from regulations. I think this can wait until Monday, and the world will be fine, as no matter what it'll need edits after Monday anyway, because what if this terrible weather that's being predicted postpones the ceremony? We can't "every time for the last xyz years" the weather. And we can't enforce whatever schedule is devised here, or even for the event generally.
I think this could live in the sandbox until Monday, when it can be accurate because it'll have happened, and would therefore be more appropriate. CuriousSunflower24 (talk) 19:31, 17 January 2025 (UTC)
Harris vs Trump
[edit]> outgoing U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris (whom Trump defeated in 2024)
When it says Vice President it might be misinterpreted that Kamala Harris was defeated in her role as a Vice President and not in her role as a candidate. 2A02:2455:9161:9F00:C59B:78B9:801:976A (talk) 20:08, 17 January 2025 (UTC)
This sentence in the lead is both too long, cumbersome and assuming:
It will be the 60th U.S. presidential inauguration and the second inauguration of Trump as U.S. president, marking the commencement of his second and final non-consecutive term as U.S. president, the term of JD Vance as the 50th U.S. vice president, and the only non-consecutive re-inauguration for a U.S. president after the second inauguration of Grover Cleveland in 1893.
Maybe a better way of wording this would be?
It would be the 60th U.S. presidential inauguration and the second inauguration of Trump as U.S. president, marking the commencement of his second term as U.S. president, and the first term of JD Vance as the 50th U.S. vice president - the only other non-consecutive re-inauguration for a U.S. president being that of Grover Cleveland in 1893. Update the Security Section
[edit]Someone with editing access on this article should add the info about the National Guard's preparations and the new shoulder patch to the security section. The info I gathered from this AP article basically boils down to this:
Ahead of the 2025 presidential inauguration, the National Guard is implementing new measures to improve security and visibility. Approximately 7,800 Guard members from over 40 states and territories will assist with traffic control, crowd management, and security in Washington, D.C., marking a significant reduction from the 25,000 deployed in 2021 after the Capitol riot. Troops will wear a new shoulder patch featuring the Guard's motto and a minuteman symbol to distinguish them from law enforcement.
Also this line from the article is interesting info: "About 87% of the Guard troops will be Army and 13% will be Air Force."

[edit]"and last democratically-elected Georgian president Salome Zourabichvili" I recommend removing the democratically-elected part and replacing it with something neutral like "the previous president", or anything else really. 155.4.128.174 (talk) 00:21, 19 January 2025 (UTC)
Protests
[edit]I've begun compiling a list of People's March protests that occurred today. I'm not sure if it will be a new page, a section of this page, something connected to 2017 Women's March or what, but here's the link to get people started. If someone else has started something please point me to it, I'll get back to it after I take a break. Kire1975 (talk) 03:02, 19 January 2025 (UTC)
- I've added it to the main page and a bunch moer. It's just a compilation of cities and citations right now. It's gonna be smaller than previous protests but I think it's already worth creating it's own page, but I'd like to get a better concensus about what to do. Kire1975 (talk) 08:29, 19 January 2025 (UTC)
- For accuracy, I recommend mentioning that the protests were actually astro-turfed by a for-profit leftist-advocacy organization: [3]. 152.130.15.114 (talk) 17:23, 19 January 2025 (UTC)
- See People's March. @Kire1975: FYI! ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:48, 20 January 2025 (UTC)
- I suggest we move the list of cities to the page dedicated to the protest. So much detail is not necessary for this entry. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:51, 20 January 2025 (UTC)
- Not all, not even half, of the protests are organized by the People's March. There are larger ones today organized by a group called "We Fight Back" and there are individual ones not associated with either group. I don't think blanking the section today in the middle of it all happening is the wisest decision. It will take some time to concentrate on sorting out which belongs on that list and which belongs on a different page or elsewhere. Thank you for making the list. Change days ago to empty
[edit]whoever added 0 days ago should probably remove it, having something at 0 days ago for a future event is not exactly constructive nor actually important BarakHussan (talk) 01:39, 20 January 2025 (UTC)
- @BarakHussan Template:Start date and age displays the "0 days ago"; this counter will increase once it hits the following day (January 21) and beyond. Jolly1253 (talk) 02:59, 20 January 2025 (UTC)
- I'll be honest the template should probably be altered to state future start days as days in future instead of default 0 days ago, it's confusing BarakHussan (talk) 03:56, 20 January 2025 (UTC)
We should list the specific number of Democrats boycotting the inauguration
[edit]Current version: Several members of the Democratic Party in the 119th Congress have decided to boycott the inauguration.
Proposed version: 16 members of the Democratic Party in the 119th Congress have decided to boycott the inauguration.
I feel like listing the number specifically makes it much easier to tell (at a glance) how big the boycott is since readers don't have to count each member in the list to determine the number of boycotters. LordOfWalruses (talk) 03:35, 20 January 2025 (UTC)
- I agree with @LordOfWalruses, In fact, I think someone could/should make a seperate list article of the congressional members and other high ranking politicians or individuals that have decided to boycott the inauguration. Then in this article, we could just state the number with a link to the full list article. Middle Mac CJM (talk) 16:39, 20 January 2025 (UTC)

German TV translator meltdown
[edit]The inauguration was covered by German Public TV channel Phoenix (German TV channel) and others, with speeches and US commentary translated into German by a Language interpretation translator. Seemingly annoyed from the Emancipation Hall speech of Trump, he stopped and asked, with open microphone "Tell me, how long to you want to stay on air with this sh*t?" before the sound was muted. Apparently this kind of language and attitude is acceptable behind the scenes of the broadcasters. German news reporting about it, in English not yet covered, apart from a reddit post. 2003:C6:373D:9EA2:A4FA:ACAE:608F:F7BD (talk) 00:55, 21 January 2025 (UTC)

Speculation that Trump is not president
[edit]Many people think that Donald Trump was not inaugurated as he did not have his hand on the Bible. 96.255.26.116 (talk) 20:43, 21 January 2025 (UTC)
- CBS News: 'Article VI of the U.S. Constitution states that "all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."'
- I've clarified in this article that it is not required to hold the bible. ―Panamitsu (talk) 22:38, 21 January 2025 (UTC)
Elon Musk salute
[edit]Should we add Elon Musk's usage of the Nazi salute in this article? It has been covered by many news sources, such as MSNBC. 74.104.160.163 (talk) 00:12, 22 January 2025 (UTC)
- I've been wondering this too. There's a section about it in the article Elon Musk that we can copy to this article if we decide on inclusion. ―Panamitsu (talk) 02:32, 22 January 2025 (UTC)
- And, also it should be mentioned that Barack Obama, AOC Hilary Clinton did the same salute. Wikipedia is loosing credibility because of siding with democratic party so half of the country will not trust this website. 47.201.30.221 (talk) 17:12, 22 January 2025 (UTC)
- Can you provide a reliable source that they did that at this inauguration? Jorts2jants (talk) 17:27, 22 January 2025 (UTC)
- I think he refers to the photos [5][6]. Despite this, in a non biased lens, both seem a huge stretch and out of context. I suggest not including Musk Nazi Salute for reasons of political bias, or at least put it as hand gesture controversy, as Forbes [7] shows that it is a hand gesture accused by some as a Sieg heil/88/nazi salute. BarakHussan (talk) 16:54, 23 January 2025 (UTC)
- While the republicans' attempts to try and claim several democratic politicians have done the same salute is definitely a stretch, the one with Elon specifically fits a long standing tradition of accidental fascist imagery popping up at right wing rallies, with just enough plausible deniability to make it look like people noticing are paranoid, see also: the prominent display of a winged Odal rune at CPAC 2021, which for some baffling reason got removed from the article. Ultimately it is not up to whether we believe if it's a stretch, or political bias, but rather it is up to reliable sources. And this incident has been widely covered by reliable sources. 46.97.170.199 (talk) 14:24, 24 January 2025 (UTC)

"Final"
[edit]The lead has said that the current term is the final term. But Surtsicna keeps removing it, despite the fact that he's not eligible to due to the Twenty-second Amendment to the United States Constitution. Surtsicna is saying that we don't know if Trump will serve another term because it is possible that the law will change, but I think that it's silly because we don't have any reason to believe that it will change. The article Second presidency of Donald Trump says that "he is not eligible for a third term" in the lead. ―Panamitsu (talk) 08:10, 10 February 2025 (UTC)
It would be nice if we could get input from other editors. ―Panamitsu (talk) 08:11, 10 February 2025 (UTC)
- I do not think it is silly for Wikipedia to avoid predicting the future. In fact, it is a policy that we should not predict the future. See WP:CRYSTALBALL. The correct way to state this is to say that, according to the amendment, Trump is not eligible for another term. Surtsicna (talk) 08:23, 10 February 2025 (UTC)
Which portrait?
[edit]There is an edit war that should be resolved. Which portrait should we use?? AsaQuathern (talk) 04:49, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- Hello. I prefer Image A for the infobox.
- Image B is quite pixelated, and I dislike Donald Trump's facial expression.
- Image C is higher quality, though I still dislike Trump's facial expression and the angle that causes Roberts to block half of his body.
- I like that with Image A, we can Trump's entire family, in addition to several prominent members of the audience; specifically, Biden and Musk, as well as Vance's entire face. Overall, I think that Image A captures this moment in a way that the other options do not.
- I would also like to note that MOS:IMAGEQUALITY asks editors to choose high quality images that "best illustrate the subject matter". Image A satisfies this guidance. Image B is the lowest quality of all the options, and part of Trump is obscured by Roberts in Image C.
- I am inviting @TheOffShoot, @WikiEdita65, and @Batong1930 to add their thoughts here. Of course, other editors are also welcome to participate in the discussion if they would like. Scoutguy138 (talk) 05:05, 8 March 2025 (UTC)
- I have to say I agree with your remarks about Trump's facial expression in Image B. However, I do not understand how Image B was more pixelated. The way I see it, Image A has a lower image quality. However, as you said, its benefits are it shows the scope of the inauguration.
- I think Image C could work if parts of the left were cropped out to create balance. However, there is still the problem of John Robert's body blocking the photo. AsaQuathern (talk) 05:13, 8 March 2025 (UTC)
- I would prefer Image B since it is much better than image A but Image C is not the best choice. Batong1930 (talk) 05:51, 8 March 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @AsaQuathern,
- The pixelation I'm referring to in Image B is because Instagram heavily compresses images. Image A is also pixelated, but to a lesser extent because of Twitter's better image compression. If you open both files from Commons and zoom in on Trump's face, I think you will be able to see what I’m talking about. Scoutguy138 (talk) 15:44, 8 March 2025 (UTC)
- I'm all for image B as it aligns really well with the one we've got for his first inauguration. To me, it also seems like a good balance between images A and C – its scope is not too big, but also not too small. I did try to change it to that image myself, but I really messed up with my source editing (I'm almost entirely a visual-edit guy). I apologise for that! WikiEdita65 (talk) 07:12, 8 March 2025 (UTC)
- I'm strongly agree with @WikiEdita65. That's what I think. I would prefer to use Image B because it does look very perfect for all sizes since it is not too small (Image A) or not too big (Image C), just like the one that are used for his first inauguration in 2017. Image A is the best option to use for the article of the entire Trump family, but Image C is not the best option. Batong1930 (talk) 14:53, 8 March 2025 (UTC)
