A: Many discussions have been had on this matter, and current consensus is to use Ireland to describe the island (which includes Northern Ireland) and the Republic of Ireland to describe the state. By order of the Arbitration Committee, all discussions from June 2009 to December 2023 of this article's title had to take place at a special project set up to deal with this issue. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Ireland-related articles for the manual of style for Ireland-related issues. From December 2023 discussions could take place on the article talk page as normal.
Republic of Ireland was a Geography and places good articles nominee, but did not meet the good article criteria at the time. There may be suggestions below for improving the article. Once these issues have been addressed, the article can be renominated. Editors may also seek a reassessment of the decision if they believe there was a mistake.

The current order of affairs is that there is a page for the Irish Republic (1919-21), then the Irish Free State (1921-1937) and then the Republic of Ireland (1937-today). However, between 1937-1948 Ireland was still under British rule: the 1937 Constitution did not proclaim a republic but rather Éire. So I suggest that there ought to be a page or at least a bigger notice that the Republic of Ireland was not formed straight after the Irish Free State as it is currently being implied. Joshua D. Between 1937 and 1949, it was no more under British rule than was Australia or Canada: the King was head of state for diplomatic purposes and no more. The state is still called "Éire" (in Irish) and "Ireland" (in English), according to whichever language is being used at the time: see Constitution of Ireland. The Republic of Ireland Act 1948 did not change the name of the state, bur merely give it an "additional description". All this is explained at The Republic of Ireland Act 1948 if you bother to read it. 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 16:54, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

In the politics section of the page, there is a line that says: "The Taoiseach (Prime Minister) serves as the head of government and is appointed by the President upon the nomination of the Dáil."
However, Taoiseach does not mean prime minister, it means "Chieftan" so the text should be changed to: "The Taoiseach (Chieftan) serves as the head of government and is appointed by the President upon the nomination of the Dáil." 213.133.65.131 (talk) 23:09, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a translation, it's an explanation using a common English phrasing for a head of government. A full explanation about the word itself can be found at taoiseach, but for this article the current explanation is sufficient and appropriate for the English language Wikipedia. Change the name of this page from "Republic of Ireland" to "Ireland - Éire". The State of Ireland is not named the Republic of Ireland, that is not its name/title. Bunreacht na hÉireann is the Constitution of Ireland and Article 4 of the Constitution specifies "The name of the State is Éire, or, in the English language, Ireland"[1]. Section 2 of the Republic of Ireland Act 1948 declares that "Republic of Ireland" is "the description of the State"[2], this is not a name it is a description only. Aside from this Ireland is registered as a member State of the United Nations and is referred to there as "Ireland" alone, as opposed to Iran for example which is registered with the United Nations as "Iran (Islamic Republic of)"[3]. Therefore this article is wrong to allude to the name of the State of Éire/Ireland being Republic of Ireland.
Also remove the part that says also known as the Republic of Ireland for the same reasons. No Irish institution or government body refers to Ireland as the Republic of Ireland. MacMiadhacháin (talk) 16:41, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
