Which section of this article should (a certain link) point to?

[edit]
[edit]

A certain hyperlink, pointing to [a part of] this article no longer works as originally intended.

[edit]

The link is displayed as the word "knight", and it is the only occurrence of that word in the lede paragraph of (the "Latest revision as of 08:00, 5 January 2025" version of) the "Order of the British Empire" article.

[edit]

It does not work (as it used to) because its wikilink includes a "#fragment" suffix, that points to the [erstwhile] "Modern honours" section of this article (that is, "Orders, decorations, and medals of the United Kingdom#Modern honours" ... which no longer exists.

That section has since been re-named.

[edit]

At first I figured that, since the section of this article that used to be named "Modern honours" seems to be [an earlier version of] the section of this article that is now called "System", that the obvious solution would be to just change the wikilink to point to "Orders, decorations, and medals of the United Kingdom#System" instead.

On the other hand, the hyperlink seems to be intended to help the reader understand the word "knight" in certain contexts, and the "Orders of chivalry" section ("Orders, decorations, and medals of the United Kingdom#Orders of chivalry") of this article contains a table with some information which might be helpful to the reader; so that might be a good choice for the place where that hyperlink should point to.

Any comments?

Does there need to be a link at all? The sentence in the Order of the British Empire article is not quite accurate anyway - it implies the two senior levels confer the same type of award - a G is not a K/D. So better to change that. Instead it could read "the most senior two of which confer a title upon the recipient" with no link. Alternatively you could use the same wording, but wikilink to Title (the bit on knights and dames is about a quarter of the way down). Not sure if you can use a fragment suffix the way it is currently set up. NB. There is no need for it to point here - this is more of a parent article - so it needs to point down a level of detail. Chin Peng

[edit]

I wonder if this article can solve the mystery about whether communist guerrilla leader Chin Peng received an OBE and whether it was revoked. Jack Upland (talk) 04:23, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
