Locarno 2020 – For the Future of Films, was a film festival held by the Locarno Film Festival organization in place of the 73rd Locarno Film Festival, which was canceled after much of the in-person events were disallowed by the Swiss government due to COVID-19.
The naming convention of this festival is odd and personally I would be open to a discussion about changing it, perhaps even to the 73rd Locarno Film Festival page, but think it is best as is, so long as it is included in the chronology of the Locarno Film Festival.
The Locarno 2020 festival both was and was not the 73rd Locarno Film Festival. In a practical sense, it was the annually held festival held by the organization (Associazione Festival del film Locarno) that is in charge. However, in press releases and the press kit it is occasionally unclear if the Locarno Film Festival Organization considered the 73rd festival truly canceled or simply reworked with a different title. In reality, the festival was sort of 73rd-ish in that it that was the annually held festival, but lacked key features: it did not have a Piazza Grande screening, it did not give out key awards, and took place both in-person and online.
The Locarno 2020 film festival should be included in the Locarno Film Festival chronology, but I believe it should be titled the "Locarno 2020 Film Festival" or Locarno 2020, but not the the 73rd Locarno Film Festival.
