Cuphead

[edit]

Many sources and reviews consider Cuphead as one of the best video games ever 2605:B100:D21:8741:1598:A672:7E8E:7C61 (talk) 07:29, 20 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Many, yes—but not six "best of" lists, which is required for inclusion here per the FAQ. It's listed on two so far. Rhain (he/him) 07:33, 20 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Indy100 - The best 100 video games of all time

[edit]

is Indy100 (the pop culture arm of The independent) considered reliable? This list was published today:

https://www.indy100.com/gaming/best-video-games-ever-all-time-100-81 67.248.79.202 (talk) 03:01, 1 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The Independent itself is RS, so indy100 should be, as well; a quick Google search pulls up a spate of WP citations. In addition, the list is editor-chosen, unrestricted by platform/genre/era, and explicitly about the best games. It looks good to go, so I have transcribed it below:
indy100, 2025

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 2. Grand Theft Auto IV 3. Super Mario World 4. Half-Life 2 5. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 6. Super Mario 64 7. Metroid Prime 8. Red Dead Redemption 2 9. The Last of Us 10. Super Mario Galaxy 11. Portal 2 12. Mass Effect 2 13. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas 14. Disco Elysium 15. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt 16. God of War Ragnarok 17. Elden Ring 18. Final Fantasy VII 19. Grand Theft Auto V 20. Bioshock 21. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty 22. Resident Evil 4 (2005) 23. God of War (2018) 24. The Last of Us Part II 33. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 34. Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal 35. World of Warcraft 36. Tomb Raider 2 37. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim 38. The Sims 39. Gran Turismo 40. If no one objects, I will incorporate this list shortly, and add entries for Hollow Knight and Baldur's Gate III, since they now meet the source threshold. In addition, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Dead Space 2, and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain are now at five sources each. (Edit: I said The Last of Us Part II was at five sources, but BenSVE clarified below that it is at four, so I removed it from this comment.) Phediuk (talk) 18:43, 1 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Done. I have also added the 2025 indy100 list to the omnibus data. Phediuk (talk) 17:27, 3 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Wouldn't TLOU2 now be eligible for this list as well now? Correct me if I'm wrong but here are the links

Thanks for the question. You have cited two GQ lists there; sources count only once toward inclusion on this page. Also, the USA Today listing is a dual entry with The Last of Us Part I, and therefore not counted. Phediuk (talk) 19:18, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for clearing up the criteria! Appreciate it! 2600:4040:45A8:2A00:2C8E:A017:4869:10DA (talk) 20:37, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Visualized data updated. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Final Fantasy XIV and Horizon Zero Dawn are at 5 as well:
Final Fantasy XIV: This new entry, IGN 2021, GQ 2023, Polygon 2017, USA Today 2022
Does one of those specifically mention the original version versus A Realm Reborn, perhaps? I noticed Sports Illustrated does and I'm not able to confirm if it's the same in USA Today.
Horizon Zero Dawn: This new entry, Edge 2017, Game Informer 2018, GamesTM 2018, GQ 2018
I believe TLOU 2 would be at 4 entries as well, but perhaps the user above was missing a valid one among the two invalid ones--I only had 3 on my spreadsheet before this one, though. BenSVE (talk) 02:56, 4 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you are correct; Final Fantasy XIV and Horizon Zero Dawn are also at five sources, and TLOU2 is at four. Nice catch. Phediuk (talk) 00:07, 5 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Does linking this list in the lead of an article need to be cited in the article itself? I had my edit adding this to Hollow Knight's lead like other similar articles get reverted as it was uncited, even though every other article that includes this has not needed additional citations for it. I wished to double check on this in case I was missing something regarding this. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 07:17, 9 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the claim that the game is on the list still needs to be cited in other articles. The reason why many pages don't cite it is because nobody generally cares to and a lot of it is newer editors linking to this page, whether it is or isn't on here (I think there was something a while ago about MGS4 linking to this page for the longest time, even though the game isn't listed here). But manay games with featured articles like Ocarina of Time (granted that's a special case) tend to cite the fact in their article prose. I cited the claim on Hotline Miami as well by listing out what magazines considered it to be one of the best. λ NegativeMP1 07:42, 9 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@NegativeMP1 Gotcha, thank you! Would you suggest just using the same citations as this article and linking them in Reception, then? Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 18:05, 9 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That's what I've done in other articles. "X has been ranked among the best video games of all time by publication,[1] publication,[2] and publication.[3]" Once it's in the body, it's pretty easy to echo the same sentence in the lead. If someone really gets fussy about contesting its inclusion in the lead, you add citations to the lead, per WP:LEADCITE. Shooterwalker (talk) 18:00, 10 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
To add to this, a game could still be cited as one of the greatest of all time and not meet the criteria to be included here. Claims don't necessarily have to be removed in cases like that but I'd avoid linking back to this page if it's not listed. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 00:33, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Kirby, where are you?

[edit]

So this is entirely random, but I've been a fan of the Kirby series for a good chunk of my life and I'm kinda surprised none of the games in his series have been added to the list yet. I'm surprised Kirby's Adventure and Kirby Super Star in particular haven't made it on here!

Now, the intent of my addition to this talk page isn't to beg or anything as I am very aware of the rules concerning this page, so instead, I ask this: how many sources have those two games (and any other Kirby title, really) gotten so far? I just thought I'd ask since I'm pretty curious here. Thanks in advance for any answers you guys may end up laying on me! 18:59, 14 March 2025 (UTC) 2A06:5900:4077:8600:7004:C9A9:6E59:CDDF (talk) 18:59, 14 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Kirby's Adventure has been included in two lists, while Kirby Super Star is in one. You can refer to this spreadsheet for other entries that've been listed. Cat's Tuxedo (talk) 20:42, 14 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, as a fellow massive Kirby fan, no individual game in the series is on more than two lists. QuicoleJR (talk) 00:05, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to add a few more games to the list of the best video games of all time. Joshington101 (talk) 12:47, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. Please make sure you familiarise yourself with the FAQ before making any specific suggestions too. Rhain (he/him) 12:49, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Joshington101: Welcome to Wikipedia! Unfortunately, this is one of the trickier articles to edit, you've picked. Most articles and lists function off one interested editor's research, and consensus when editors disagree, but this is more like a meta-list. To be compliant with Wikipedia policies against "original research" (i.e. just being a fan list in this case), it's more like there's a consensus on what standard to apply (how many best-of lists, which best-of lists), and then that standard "produces" a list. This doesn't mean you can't help out, but it does make it much more difficult on this article specifically. For this article, a better question might be: do you know of any good best-of lists that aren't currently consulted, and meet the criteria in the FAQ at the top of this talk page? Alternatively, if you're looking to just get started in editing video games in general, you'll find plenty of support at WT:VG. Most other articles don't have the very strict criteria used here (although you should still seek to honor what sources say, rather than your own personal ideas). SnowFire (talk) 12:53, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Add roblox Games.

[edit]

even though roblox is a platform, it has multiple games Ceokm (talk) 23:00, 28 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

No game on Roblox has ever made any list of the "best games of all time", in accordance with this pages criteria. And to be brutally honest, they likely never will be. λ NegativeMP1 23:09, 28 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
yeah, instead of it being on the best list, how about video games notable for negative reception instead. Ceokm (talk) 16:23, 31 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back

[edit]

I am surprised the second Crash Bandicoot game is not here, when the third game is. It is actually a common option to think 2 is the best as it refines 1 gameplay while having a lot more pure platforming stages compared to 3. It is also got really positive reviews from both critics and users like 3 did. 80.198.18.220 (talk) 23:27, 28 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

PC Gamer Top 100 PC games

[edit]

PC Gamer has an annual list of what they consider to be the 100 best PC games (not necessarily released in the year of the list), perhaps that can be added to the publications used on this page? Here's the 2024 edition of the list: The top 100 PC games. ArtemisiaGentileschiFan (talk) 01:12, 3 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Good find, but unfortunately it doesn't fit the inclusion criteria as it's limited to one platform (PC games). Still an interesting read, though; thanks for sharing. Rhain (he/him) 01:17, 3 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

add the game 'Terraria' to the 2011 list, as it is one of the top 10 best selling games of all time, and is also on the top 10 highest rated steam games of all time, and it was the first ever steam game to hit 1 million positive reviews

Good day. I have noticed that Team Cherry who created Hollow Knight does not have a hyperlink even though a Wikipedia article of them exists. Could I have the opportunity to rectify this mistake? Diovale2002 (talk) 17:23, 15 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Team Cherry does not have an article. There is a disambiguation page named "Team Cherry", but it merely points to the pages on Hollow Knight and Hollow Knight: Silksong, with no information on the developer themselves. Thus, it would be unnecessary to link it. -insert valid name here- (talk) 19:35, 15 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
