The article says "This is a list of all species of spiders that are known to occur in New Zealand, including its subantarctic islands. The list contains 1,109 species". In 2016 Cor Vink said there were 1157 described species.[1] Have there been changes since 2016 that have removed 48 species? Nurg (talk) 00:49, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes numerous species have been synonymized or otherwise recognized as nomen dubium. Exact estimates of spider species count fluctuate quite bit as it's a fairly active area of research in NZ taxonomy. This is also why the page count will need to be updated regularly. The most recent to have an estimate is Sirvid et al 2020 (https://www.doc.govt.nz/globalassets/documents/science-and-technical/nztcs34entire.pdf) where the report states there are 1,156 taxa assessed (note that this assessment includes undescribed species). It's also always possible that I've missed a few taxonomically obscure species, I've gone over this numerous times and haven't found anything missing yet. If there are missing species, they'll be revealed in time.
Once I've finished creating pages for all NZ spider species, I'll be asking Cor and other spider researchers in NZ to have a look over the page and see if they can spot any missing. AxonsArachnida (talk) 04:59, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
