Trucks aren't guns
[edit]Why is a truck attack doing here? 177.76.41.247 (talk) 03:08, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- There were casualties caused by firearms in the attack, another IP editor added casualties caused by the truck when they weren't supposed to. Raskuly (talk) 03:36, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
On the New Orleans shooting section, the numbers and the description doesn't align.
[edit]Okay, so on the dead-injured-total section of the New Orleans shooting, the numbers are just 2, 5 and 7 respectively despite the description contradicting this by saying that thirteen people were killed in the New Orleans shooting and dozens more injured. Can someone find a source that actual tells how many people were injured and update this misalignment? Languagelover3000 (talk) 13:32, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- The description notes casualties caused by the truck attack, but we only count casualties caused by firearm. The text in bold is about the casualties that are tracked on this list. If you can write it better without removing a lot of context, go ahead.
- "The man killed thirteen people and injured several dozen others with the truck before he crashed into a crane, after which he exited the vehicle and opened fire, striking two police officers and at least six other people, including one person who was killed, before he was fatally shot by police." Misleading definition
[edit]The caption defines mass shootings for the sake of the article as incidents with 4 or more victims, but mentions multiple incidents with only 3 victims unless you count the perpetrator. For the sake of transparency with the reader, this should be disclosed or alternatively, we can stick to our word and only include incidents with 4 victims. Some definitions still consider that a mass shooting but I just find a little weird that we're considering the perpetrator or suspect a victim. We can debate what to do about it, changing our definition will be easiest while more appropriately following the definition will allow the information to more accurately align with how most people define mass shootings. MountainJew6150 (talk) 15:47, 28 January 2025 (UTC)
- I was in favor of sticking to 4 victims+ incidents. What about incidents in which it is a shootout and there are four or more casualties? Raskuly (talk) 17:31, 28 January 2025 (UTC)
This seems to unfortunately be a part of a larger and potentially more deeply rooted issue on Wiki. The main wiki "mass shooting" page acknowledges that most people do not count gang violence and certain other types of violence as "mass shootings". Yet we seem to have allowed sources which define a mass shooting under much more broad definitions into the fray, with the 'rules' for adding that it must meet "at least 2" of the sources of mass shootings ... with seeming disregard for the credibility of the sources, or the common-language definition of a mass shooting. It looks like only Stanford, Mother Jones, and the Congressional Research Service, out of the 7 sources, actually have parameters around shooting intent, as the main "mass shooting" wikipedia acknowledges "are generally characterized by the targeting (often indiscriminate) of victims in a non-combat setting, and thus the term generally excludes gang violence, shootouts and warfare". The decision to include less-used definitions appears political in nature, as those sources are generally anti-gun organizations who benefit from larger, scarier numbers. Wikipedia articles on the individual shootings?
[edit]Are there Wikipedia articles about any of these individual shootings? If so, how/where does one find those Wikilinks in this article? 98.123.38.211 (talk) 16:37, 22 March 2025 (UTC)
I see, there are articles on the UPMC Memorial Hospital shooting and 2025 New Orleans truck attack, which are wikilinked in the "Description" section. 98.123.38.211 (talk) 16:39, 22 March 2025 (UTC)
Please update the total number of mass shootings.

- While the effort to point out incidents is appreciated, keep in mind that Wikipedia is not a news site. If you know of an incident from an older date than just a few days ago it would be appreciated if you would either add it to the list yourself, or if you do not feel comfortable, bring it up on the Talk page as you have done with the other incidents. Raskuly (talk) 11:09, 25 March 2025 (UTC)
- Ok got it; the content here is fully dependent on whether incidents get reported by other mass-shooting data websites. My bad for mistaking this site as a crowd-sourced primary data aggregator. Thanks for everything you guys do; keep up the great work! 136.33.79.48 (talk) 15:36, 27 March 2025 (UTC)
