Adding a very obvious character
[edit]I don’t see Professor X from the X-men film series included on this thread and I feel like it should be. Idk if it wasn’t added because he’s in lots of movies but he definitely should be included since he’s an iconic wheelchair-user. I do not know how to add stuff to Wikipedia myself though. - Thanks for your comment. He's already on the page. Historyday01 (talk) 19:32, 16 April 2025 (UTC)
some questions/notes
[edit]Apologies for the vague topic header, but I've got some questions/notes/suggestions
- how are the characters ordered? I can't see an immediate logic in the order. I know the table is sortable but it seems logical to have a baseline order. by year oldest->newest or alphabetically by title makes the most sense to me. by year would mean that multiple characters from the same work but with different starting years are separated (for example, characters in a soap series that were introduced in different years), which is a minor annoyance but the table is sortable so people can sort by title if they'd want to view it that way.
- how are adaptations of the same character handled? (for example, a novel which was adapted into a movie) does it make sense to include all of them, or only the original character?
- I don't know what the notability requirement for this page is but if it's restricted to just works that have a page on enwiki, then I feel like it makes sense to only include the original character, and people can go to the work's page for information about adaptations, to prevent the list from becoming unwieldy. on the other hand, sometimes an adapted version is more well-known than the original (like captain Hook: I reckon more people know him from the animated movie than from the book).
- recurring instances of the same character (like dr. Strange in all the different sequels and prequels and whatnot, but it's still the same character in the same continuity): list only the first one? do or do not make note of the rest? list all of them?
- length for the "disability" column: some entries provide more information than others (for example, whether the actor is disabled, disability-related backstory for the character). would it be good to have some more consistency in this column in terms of what information should and shouldn't be included? I know consistency is not always the most important thing and I don't want to prune too much, but it feels a bit fluffy in places.
(I know I'm talking a lot about rules and requirements and all that. My intention is not to impose rules on this page, if the answer is "there are no specific rules, just use common sense" then that's good for me as well. I just want to get some clarification before I start editing the page so I don't like. Accidentally blow everything up lol.) TheZoodles (talk) 13:20, 15 April 2025 (UTC)
- Those are all good questions. I think in terms of the order it was supposed to be last name? In terms of adaptations of the same character, maybe we should just have a category JUST for those characters. Just a thought. Consistency on these pages is definitely important and something I've been trying to do on some other pages, so being more consistent is definitely a good idea. I may respond more later in the day to your comment, but thanks for raising it here. Historyday01 (talk) 16:53, 15 April 2025 (UTC)
- I would bring in all those involved in the previous RfC on this to see their thoughts on your proposal. I don't want to involve myself so deeply as I did last time, which led to a tense discussion some years ago. For now, I would say there are no specific rules, just use common sense. Heads up @User:Randy Kryn, @User:Erik, @User:Tcr25, @User:Dimadick, @User:Ɱ, @User:Colin M, @User:Trystan, @User:Bluerasberry, @User:Ixtal, @User:North8000, @User:AFreshStart, @User:PHShanghai, and @User:Sirdog, I thought you might be interested in sharing your thoughts here, more than what I've said. I don't want to be as deeply involved as I was before, since well... that led to issues. But you all may have something more to say.Historyday01 (talk) 19:46, 16 April 2025 (UTC)
