Chronology

Initially, I had intended to only list each headquarters once, but it became extremely complicated when houses were used multiple times over years or when Washington was moving around from one to another, trying to evade the British. I finally realized that creating a coherent chronology was more important than avoiding repetition.

There are some conflicts on exact dates.

Please feel free to expand the list, or make suggestions on how it could be improved.

Travel expense receipts found in tha National Archives can improve and correct this list-viz-

September 18-19, 1780. Caleb Baldwin Tavern, 32 Main Street, Newtown CT. (Keeler's Tavern is most improbable).

September 19-20, 1780. Thomas Lewis, Farmington. Perhaps. There is a receipt in this grouping that is not dated. It fits very well here. There is another receipt from Lewis on Sept. 23 but it appears to be for his aides.

September 23-24, 1780. Col. Andrew Morehouse, Pawling NY

Also:

May 18-19, 1781. Gideon Morgan's Tavern was in the village of New Preston, town of Washington CT.

May 24-25, "lodged at Litchfield." Sheldon's Tavern (payment to Sheldon from Trumbull on behalf of Washington for May 1781). On the 25th he only "Breakfasted at Squire Cogswells." I find no contemporary evidence of William Cogswell owning a tavern. The tavern there was run by his son-in-law Gideon Morgan.

Eagle Tavern		Broad Street at William Street/Branford Place Newark, New Jersey 40°44′03″N 74°10′21″W / 40.734167°N 74.172542°W / 40.734167; -74.172542 (Eagle Tavernb)	November 22 to 28, 1776	Major Samuel Sayres, proprietor. Washington himself was lodged a home of Judge McWhorter^[1]^[2]^[3]

The Eagle Tavern in the list mentions Newark, but gives a Jersey City address and coords. It's clear that the Great Retreat was via Newark, though it is also believed that Washington would come to Bergen Hill to view the situation in New York Harbor from atop the Hudson Palisades overlooking it.Djflem (talk) 08:42, 2 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
