The 1911 source states: "After the close of the war, Commodore Marston was appointed inspector of lighthouses in the Boston district, and in 1866 was promoted to the rank of rear-admiral"; the 2013 source states: "In March 1881 he received a final promotion to rear admiral on the retired list".
