Likely lack of helium production on net by fusion plants
[edit]This article suggests that a nuclear fusion power plant would produce helium as a by-product. This is technically true, but functionally not true. A gigawatt-scale deuterium-tritium fusion plant would produce roughly 70 kg / year of helium-4, about 400 cubic meters (at STP). However, fusion plants (including Commonwealth Fusion's ARC plant) would require cryogenic cooling systems with inventories likely measured in *tons* of helium. Inevitable helium leaks could easily make a fusion plant a net consumer. Antifracture (talk) 16:50, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
