[edit]I have just heard this man described as the "Minister responsible for Climate Change" on the BBC's Radio 4 "PM" newsish programme. Does anyone have a more persuasive source so that we can include this extension of his responsibilities in the wiki entry? Charles01 (talk) 17:12, 11 December 2010 (UTC)

BLP issues
[edit]I have reverted back to the edit before an anonymous ip turned this into highly negative rant: diff.
I have no opinion about this topic, other than that a lede like that is not appropriate for Wikipedia, and a massive laundry list of allegations without context isn't right either. I trust we can have a solid discussion here about how to improve the article. Jimbo Wales (talk) 11:42, 28 February 2025 (UTC)
- Or perhaps there is evidence to the contrary, and you didn't see all sides of this close enough (the bad wording, regrettable), or again assuming something is never there? Looking at the controversies that were there before you reverted it and several mostly good-faith edits (even by admins), they do have RS-backed cites (except for one Daily Mail) regarding this alleged connection or collaboration to Russia, even to the detriment of his home country.

Hi, I'd like to request an edit on behalf of Gregory Barker. We noticed that the entry doesn't mention Lord Barker's main position in the last few years as Chairman of EV Network, and would like to request this information added to make the entry more accurate and up to date. I'd therefore wish to propose the following additions.
1. Add "Former" before "British Conservative Party politician...".
2. At the end of the opening paragraph/intro (right after "appointed to the House of Lords.") add the following sentence - "Currently, Barker is the chairman of The EV Network, a UK-based independent developer of high-powered EV charging stations". This is based on sources #1 and #2
3. Under the Business section add the following: "Barker was appointed Chairman of The EV Network in 2017. In August 2020 the organization secured £50 million for the construction of its first round of projects, to develop ultra-fast charging points to approxiamtely 100 locations nationally." (source #3) "In 2021 The EV Network signed an agreement with bp pulse to develop and construct provisions of ultra-fast charging infrastructure." (sources #4 and #5)

- @Mclavi25 Source #2 gives me an error. If this is some kind of uploaded file, I strongly recommend finding an actually published source, even if it's the company's own website. Rusalkii (talk) 06:20, 20 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for reviewing some of my requests @Rusalkii. In regards to source #2, perhaps you cand double check? It's working fine when I try to open it, and it's a regular online page, not an uploaded file. Mclavi25 (talk) 16:24, 27 March 2025 (UTC)
- Still an error: "This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below." And then "<Code>AccessDenied</Code>

- My apologies @Rusalkii, I think you're right. For some reason I was looking at the wrong URL when I checked. I think this is the original URL I was referring to - https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/officers/oE_5rhILfLzaumntood5Z9bbEGM/appointments. Not sure it's needed at this stage though. Mclavi25 (talk) 11:37, 30 March 2025 (UTC)

- Re:"former" politician, if a person is best known for doing something and has now stopped doing it, we will usually still say "is an X". See e.g. Spencer Abraham, Lamar Alexander. I've added "and businessperson" for now.
- Source #1 gives, in addition to his chairing EVN, "Currently, he advises Powerhive, sits on the board of Glassview, and The Clean Growth Leadership Network (CGLN), is a Governor of Lancing College, and a Patron of the Garden Museum and the Aldersgate Group." I assume some of these are basically ornamental positions, but could you explain why we're calling out his work at EVN in particular?
- I do not see in either #4 or #5 the year he was appointed chairman. - oh, it's in #1, I see. This is a biography of Barker, not the company, so I'm not including the several setnences about what the company has been up to, but I've added a sentence about his appointment. Rusalkii (talk) 06:35, 20 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks again @Rusalkii. Please see my feedback:
- 1. Regarding not adding "former" - understood. If this is the usual way to refer to it on Wikipedia, than no problem.
- 2. Additional positions, you're right, Lord Barker has had a lot of positions in different companies. We wanted to start with EV Network because it's one of his more prominent roles in the last few years, and some of the others mentioned are voluntary roles (CGLN and Lancing College). We can submit additional roles he has after his time in parliament which were also significant. I'll look for relevant sources and add them as well.
- For example, his position on Powerhive's advisory board alongside Leonardo DiCaprio - https://www.ecowatch.com/leonardo-dicaprio-and-greg-barker-join-forces-to-bring-solar-to-off-gr-1882129943.html
- 3. Information about EVN not incorporated because it's about the company. Also understood. Mclavi25 (talk) 16:34, 27 March 2025 (UTC)

I noticed a few incorrections and information that could be misleading in the paragraphs about EN+, and would like to suggest edits to reflect the events that took place.
Please update the following paragraph:
"Barker was appointed as Independent Chairman of the Board of Directors of En+ Group in October 2017, a company owned by the Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, who sits on the U.S. sanctions list. In February 2019, he was appointed as Executive Chairman of the Board."
to the following:
"Barker was appointed as Independent Chairman of the Board of Directors of En+ Group in October 2017 to initiate a new strategy for the firm [source 1 from list below], ahead of its IPO on the London Stock Exchange in November 2017, led by Citigroup Global Markets, J.P. Morgan Securities and Bank of America [source 2 from list below]. The company of which Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, who sits on the U.S. sanctions list, would become a partial non-contolling share [source 4 from list below]. Barker's appointment saw the formation of a new board of directors, and worked to reduce Deripaska's holding in the London-based company from 70% to 45% and voting rights down to 35%. Following the removal of Deripaska's control of the company, as instrcuted by the U.S. Department of Treasury's Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC), and after actions had ensured that all independent directors had "no business, professional, or family ties to Deripaska or any other SDN" sanctions were lifted from EN+ Group in January 2019. [source 3 and 5 from list below] In turn the company started expanding into more sustainable energy options.[source 1 from list below] In February 2019, he was appointed as Executive Chairman of the Board."

Request for removal: speculative content regarding Lord Barker and EN+ restructuring
Although the following statement is well sourced by the Guardian, it's merely speculation about the future of EN+ and Lord Barker's potential involvement in it. We don't know if such a company was formed, but if so, Lord Barker did not take on the speculated role and has had no involvement in the company since he left. Including this information in the article gives weight to unmaterialized scenario, and could mislead readers.
Given Wikipedia's policy on verifiability and avoiding speculation, please remove the following:
"The Guardian wrote, "The new company [a company En+ is considering setting up] would be owned by management and non-Russian investors, and potentially led by Barker, according to a report by Bloomberg News that was referenced by EN+. It would take on Rusal's alumina, bauxite and aluminium assets across the world, including in Africa, Australia and Europe."" Mclavi25 (talk) 12:20, 19 March 2025 (UTC)
Early career section
[edit]![]() | This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
On the early career section of the entry it says "Barker also developed strong links to the Russian oil companies, being head of communications at the Anglo-Siberian Oil Company from 1998 to 2000". This part isn't true, and isn't backed up by any proper source. We therefore ask to have it removed.
The part about Greg having worked at Sibneft Oil Group is true and can be sourced with the following: 1. https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-en-ipo-chairman/russias-en-names-former-uk-energy-minister-as-chairman-ahead-of-ipo-idUKKBN1CN0QA/ 2. https://www.gov.uk/government/people/gregory-barker
Suggestion, the entire paragraph can be replaced with: "Between 1998 to 2000, Barker served as Head of International Investor Relations for Sibneft, a major Russian oil company that was owned by Roman Abramovich." Mclavi25 (talk) 11:47, 19 March 2025 (UTC)
- Hmm. Added the sources + rephrased for Sibneft.
- Removing the Anglo-Siverian Oil Company is a little trickier. On one hand, I can in fact find sources supporting this fact, e.g. [1], [2]. On the other hand, this information was added to the wikipedia source by an IP in 2008, so I suppose these could both be citogenesis, and these sources do not inspire maximum confidence in the fact of Reuters apparently adding and then removing a mention of his employment at the Anglo-Siberian oil company. On the third hand, one of those sources appears to be an internal parliament magazine, which you would really think ought to know better ...intensely mixed feelings about this, honestly. For now, I have added the source, going to leave this one open so I can get a second opinion. Rusalkii (talk) 06:54, 20 March 2025 (UTC)
- This is weird. I understand the confusion, especially because it was published in The House magazine in 2012. However, it's factually wrong, and I assume that they probably just didn't fact check - so it probably was taken from Wikipedia itself like you suspected. It also doesn't appear here - https://www.gov.uk/government/people/gregory-barker. Not sure how else we can prove that Lord Barker didn't have any role/affiliation with Anglo-Siberian Oil Company. If you have any idea, let me know.
- I'd also like to ask to remove the sentence "Barker also developed strong links to the Russian Oil companies". I believe it violates a number of Wikipedia policies for BLPs:
- 1. This is not backed by a reliable and relevant source. It is based on the fact that he had a postion at Sibneft for 2 years between 1998 and 2000, and sounds more like an assumption or speculation.
- 2. "Developed strong links" is a vague, subjective and miseleading statement and sounds more like a biased opinion rather than a neutral point of view.
- Please consider removing it. Mclavi25 (talk) 17:03, 27 March 2025 (UTC)
- On reflection, I think this is thorny enough I want some extra eyes on beyond COI reviewers, given that his involvement with oil + Russian companies was the subject of some considerable controversy even if this particular job was not. Could you make a post to Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard laying out the issue and pointing to this discussion? Rusalkii (talk) 19:45, 27 March 2025 (UTC)
- Added tot he noticeboard. Mclavi25 (talk) 11:48, 30 March 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Rusalkii, as suggested by Nil Einne (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Nil_Einne) on https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons/Noticeboard&oldid=1283254045#Greg_Barker,_Baron_Barker_of_Battle we've reached out to the editor of The House magazine to make the correction, and they have issued a correction on https://library.myebook.com/thehouse/house-supplement-decc-guide-2012-2025-reupload/6018/#page/33. They also mentioned that they will reach out to the old host to take down the outdated version -the magazine is run by a different company today, so they can't take it down themselves.
- Please let me know if we can now remove this sentence from Lord Barker's entry. Mclavi25 (talk) 06:12, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- Huh.
Go ahead and remove it, that's good enough for me. Rusalkii (talk) 06:18, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks, will do. Mclavi25 (talk) 06:40, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

Gregory Barker and his partner George Prassas were married in 2022. We'd therefore like to add Prassas as his spouse from 2022 and onward. Mclavi25 (talk) 12:03, 19 March 2025 (UTC)
- Could you please provide a source for this? Thank you! Rusalkii (talk) 06:21, 20 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks, I can try to allocate a legal document to support this. The only indication I found online was that they were engaged in 2021 - https://www.pressreader.com/uk/daily-mail/20211218/282089165083606. If I attain a legal document that's not currently online is it possible to share it here? Mclavi25 (talk) 17:07, 27 March 2025 (UTC)
- A document that isn't published fails the criteria that information be generally verifiable, though if it's not online but anyone could theoretically e.g. go to a courthouse and request it that's fine. Something like a social media post by Barker would work for this sort of non-controversial WP:ABOUTSELF claim. Rusalkii (talk) 19:36, 27 March 2025 (UTC)
- Does Lord Barker have to publish the document itself on his social media account? Or would a regular post about his marriage be enough? Mclavi25 (talk) 11:51, 30 March 2025 (UTC)
- A regular post would be totally fine, for this sort of routine non-controversial information. Rusalkii (talk) 16:48, 30 March 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Rusalkii, Lord Barker added his marriage certificate on his personal website - https://www.gregorybarker.com/certificate. Please let me know if this is sufficient in order to add George Prassas as his spouse from December 2022 onward on the infobox. Might also be worth adding on his Personal life section. Thanks. I believe that the following paragraph (split into 3 parts) doesn't provide full, accurate and neutral views/details of the real life events that led to Lord Barker's appointment to MP and should therefore be edited.
1. The origianl sentence - "In 2001, Barker became the MP for Bexhill and Battle after the retirement of the sitting Conservative MP, Charles Wardle."
Proposed edits: "In 2001, Barker became the MP for Bexhill and Battle succeeding Conservative MP, Charles Wardle, who had announced in 2000 that he would be standing down at the election after taking a £120,000 a year part-time job with Harrods boss Mohamed Al Fayed".
2. The original sentence - "Barker's nomination by the Conservative Party was hotly debated when sitting MP and former Home Office minister Charles Wardle accused Barker of being disingenuous about his business career and after the election, formally requesting new Conservative Party Leader Iain Duncan Smith to investigate possible links between Barker and the infamous Russian billionaire Boris Berezovsky."
Proposed edits: "Barker's nomination by the Conservative Party was hotly debated when Wardle called for the Tory ethics and integrity committee to investigate details Barker had made on his CV regarding his business career and possible links to Boris Berezovsky. In response, Barker acknowledged he had met Berezovsky but denied having had any financial ties to him. The Conservative Party cleared Barker of any wrongdoing after an internal investigation was held."

3. The original sentence - Wardle supported Nigel Farage (who later became the Leader of the United Kingdom Independence Party), but Barker won the safe seat securing over 10,500 votes ahead of the Liberal Democrat candidate, Stephen Hardy."
Proposed edits: "Wardle was removed from the Conservative Party after announcing support for independent candidate, Nigel Farage (who later became the Leader of the United Kingdom Independence Party), and James Arbuthnot told Mr Wardle that his conduct was "in total condlict" with his continued recipt of the whip. Barker, who was the official Conservative Party candidate for the seat, won the safe seat securing over 10,500 votes ahead of the Liberal Democrat candidate, Stephen Hardy."

Ministerial Career

I noticed that Lord Barker's entry doesn't portray any of his ministerial work, which is a bit odd, because most ministers have sections describing what they did, initiatives they led, and other items of public interest, during their tenure. Examples - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Davey, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amber_Rudd, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Huhne, etc.
I would therefore like to propose the following additions to the entry:
In May 2010, Gregory Barker was appointed Minister of State for Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) in the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government led by Prime Minister David Cameron, serving under secretaries of State Chris Huhne and later Ed Davey. The position supported the Secretary of State on a number of domestic and international climate change issues, from energy efficiency, carbon reduction commitments, and decentralized and renewable energy to field poverty, social tariffs, and promoting consumer interests, including various green initiatives.

Green Investment Bank
During his tenure, Barker played a role in the creation of the Green Investment Bank (GIB) in 2012 with the goal to reduce Britain's debt and yearly deficit. In the October following the 2010 general election, Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, announced plans to establish the bank in Parliament. The Chancellor stated that £1 billion of funding had been set aside as part of the Spending review with the hope of additional capital raised from private sector investment and proceeds from government asset sales. The UK GIB was established two yearls later with £3 billion of Government money. The announcement was at a stakeholder event in Edinburgh by then Business Secretary, Dr. Vince Cable, with Bank Chair Lord Smith of Kelvin and Chief Executive Shaun Kinsbury, joined by Greg Barker in his capacity as Minister of DECC, Energy Secretary Edward Davey and Scotland Secretary Michael Moore. In the years after his tenure, Barker was a staunch critic of the plans to fully privatize GIB, reportedly penning a letter to Prime Minister Theresa May urging her to "rethink". Following rumours that the new owners, infrastructure investment giant Macquarie Group, planned to assest strip. On Twitter (now X) he said: "I have written directly to PM to rethink sale of this big Conservative success story," and advised that she should "...tell PHammondMP to halt sale & pass #GIB back to #BEIS Ministers who have the right vision & grip & understand its value".

Renewable Heat Incentive In November 2011, the DECC headed by Barker launched the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), aimed at encouraging the adoption of renewable heating technologies. However, the initative forced delays, leading to criticism from the green heat industry, which warned that the hold-up could dampen interest in renewable heat technologies.

Capital Markets climate Initiative (CMCI) In September 2010, Barker launched the Capital Markets Climate Initative to engage the private sector in mobilizing investment for climate-friendly projects both nationally and globally; particularly in developing countries. The initiative aimed to identify and address barriers to private investment in low-carbon infrastructure. Consisting of over 80 participants from investment banks, pension funds, think tanks and academia, the initiative aimed to drive innovation and create partnerships between the public and private sectors to support low carbon climate resilient growth. During the launch at the London Stock Exchange, Barker stated: "The vital role of capital markets in tackling climate change has been overlooked for far too long. The finance needed to help developing countries become low carbon isn't flowing at the rate and scale needed."

I think it could also make sense to change the "House of Commons" title to "Parliamentary Career", and add this new section under the title of "Ministerial Career" before the "House of Lords" section. Mclavi25 (talk) 07:43, 14 April 2025 (UTC)

There are two more important roles we think should be added to Lord Barker's entry, and therefore suggest the following additions:
1. "In November 2014, Mayor of London, Boris Johnson appointed Barker as the new chairman of the London Sustainable Development Commission. He led the organisation in it's goal to ensure environmental challenges were prioritised across London, where an estimated population growth of 11 million people (37%) by 2050 was reported."

I suggest adding this after the sentence - "On 14 July 2014, he announced he would not be standing at the 2015 general election."
2. In June 2021, Lord Barker was additionally appointed as co-chair of the World Bank Group's Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition (CPLC) alongside Chile's Minister Juan Carlos Jobet, with whom he shared duties in opening discussions around issues such as post pandemic transitioning to Net Zero and universal carbon pricing, something of which Barker was a strong proponent. He stated: "This should be a bipartisan issue... I'm not a believer in a one size fits all. There will be different applications of carbon price depending on the country or the community that it's aimed at, but the underlying principle that you should put a price on dangerous carbon pollution to drive investment away from fossil fuels and into exciting clean areas of the economy has to be right."

I suggest additing this on the BUSINESS section of the career. Mclavi25 (talk) 06:38, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
