"Potential lover" of Brontë

[edit]

I found the article seemed to have one glaring omission. It stated Nussey was a "potential lover" of Charlotte Brontë in its short Lede - but then said nothing further on the subject in the whole remaining article. So I amended "potential lover" to "possible lover", as a more accurate description (ie. everybody has the "potential" to be or do anything). Then created new section "Brontë letters", with wording and source-cites copied entire from a section of CB's wiki-article, to justify the Lede's mention of "lover". Personally, I neither believe nor disbelieve the possibility of their long-term affair - I've no axe to grind on the matter. It's just the glaring omission that needed fixing IMHO - one shouldn't state something in the Lede with no follow-on or reasoning anywhere in the rest of the article. Incidentally, I inserted the clause "given their passionate friendship" into the CB article's sentence (originally it was just "Some scholars believe it is possible Charlotte Brontë was in a romantic or sexual relationship with Ellen Nussey"), before copying the entire section into the EN article. The phrase "passionate friendships" was mentioned on the rear jacket of the cited book (Not a Passing Phase: Reclaiming Lesbians in History 1840-1985 - it states "...this anthology re-examines the passionate friendships of writers such as" ...etc) and thought yes, good phrase that should be included too, as it's equally possible that's all there was to it, just a passionate friendship. So I hope I've achieved what I set out to do, which is to leave the reader feeling better informed about CB's "possible lover". Pete Hobbs (talk) 16:17, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
