This article seems to claim with no supporting evidence that opening a tiki bar around 1958 was somehow daring or innovative. Themed tiki bars go back to the 1930s. In 1955 he was managing the Lafayette Hotel in Long Beach, California, which hosted a Miss Universe beauty pageant; he later married the contestant from Indiana.
